DEWEYVILLE — The Deweyville Pirates ran up and down a wet field all night Friday and eeked out an 8-6 victory over the Vinton Lions.

It took a blocked punt for a fouth-quarter safety to give Deweyville (1-0) the season-opening win over Vinton (0-1).

The Pirates rushed for 365 yards and recorded 15 first downs, but turnovers kept them from paydirt. They lost two of three fumbles inside the Lions’ 5 yard line, and two interceptions also stopped drives.

Keaton Addison scored for Deweyville on a one-yard run in the second quarter. The kick failed. Vinton tied it up in the third.

Addison led the Pirates’ offense with 166 yards on 19 carries. Brandon Powell had 114 yards on 12 carries. Cruz Thraikille contributed 51 yards, and Steven Gibson added another 49.

The Lions were held to 153 yards.

“This was a big win against a team much larger than us,†said assistant coach Will Mallette.

Deweyville plays Evadale on Friday, and Vinton plays South Cameron.
