Lu's SETX Recruits

Recommended Posts

Why does Lamar tend to recruit more players in Southeast Texas in baseball than in basketball? We also have many talented players in this area in basketball as well as baseball.

If LU could get one local blue-chipper (or someone close) and win big for a year or two, that would change everything and the best kids would consider staying home. I'm sure they attempt to get the best local talent, but those kids tend to go elsewhere. On a prestige scale of 1-5, Lamar peaked out at a 3 in the late 70's and early 80's under Tubbs and Foster, but we all know they've dropped off dramatically. One dominant player could change that and make the local kids take notice. Someone just has to take a chance on LU for that to happen...

you also have to consider just the sheer numbers in baseball versus basketball.  While there are 12 or 13 scholarships available in basketball - there might be 30 kids or more on the baseball roster.  Plus - the majority of these baseball players don't get full rides, so it makes more sense for them to stay closer to home.

And Lamar has had some local kids in the past few years.  Donny coryell, Kenyon spears, Brandon Chappell and now Ashton Hall.
