Lady Mustangs torture Liberty

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

EVADALE — If it would've been a prizefight between the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs and Liberty Lady Panthers Friday night in the Class 3A bid strict round of the playoffs, the bout would've been called off in the second round. No, make that the second quarter.

After leading just 10-5 at the end of the first period, the Lady Mustangs opened the second period with the first eight points and they never looked back as they spanked the Lady Panthers 57-22 at Rebel Gym.

Senior WO-S point guard Brittney Scott fired in a whopping 31 points and the Lady Mustangs' stifling defense limited the Lady Panthers to just eight field goals.

“Our offense started out a little sluggish so we rode our defense to create some easier scoring opportunities,†said Lady Mustang head coach Callie Orebo. “We played great defense all night. It just didn’t come from our starters either, the entire team played well. The kids off the bench really gave us a spark.â€

Kia Hartfield pumped in 13 points and the gifted outside shooter buried three three-pointers in the second-quarter outburst to enable the Lady Mustangs (21-8), the third-place team out of District 21-3A, to cruise past the 22-3A runnerup Lady Panthers (14-13).

“Kia, once she gets rolling, it’s hard to keep her down,†said Orebo. “She had a few good looks in the first quarter that didn’t fall but came so close. She got into a rhythm there in the second quarter and that led to a big run. Those three three-pointers kinda broke Liberty’s back.â€

The Lady Mustangs will have a much taller task come Friday night when they take on the Navasota Lady Rattlers at 7:30 p.m. at Humble Atascocita High school in the area round.

Liberty was simply no match for WO-S from the very beginning.

The Lady Rattlers, District 23-3A champions, are ranked No. 5 in the latest Class 3A state poll.

“We’re going to have to be on the top of our game in all areas when we face Navasota,†said Orebo. “Like us, they play in a tough district and they’ve won a lot of big games. You can’t afford many mistakes against that group.â€

Despite struggling from the field, WO-S built up a 10-5 cushion heading to the second period.

Things unraveled quickly for Liberty in the second period and a three-point bomb unleashed by Hartfield quickly upped the score to 18-6.

The Lady Mustangs, used a suffocating full-court press in the second half to subdue the Lady Panthers. WO-S forced Liberty into 31 turnovers on the night and held a commanding 46-34 rebounding advantage.

The Lady Mustangs went into intermission with a 26-12 lead and poured it own with a 22-5 spurt in the third period. Scott scored 16 points in the third, burying two three-pointers in the process.

“Brittney was upset with her play in the first half and she wanted to come out and prove a point in that third quarter,†said Orebo. “And, she certainly did that.â€

Post Janae Hendreson added nine points and nine boards for the Lady Mustangs. Dominique Riggs and Rebecca McMillon, two starters that played excellent on the defensive end, each collected nine rebounds. The Lady Mustangs received solid bench production from the likes of Kristin LeBouef (six rebounds), Carmyn Adams, Cayla Adams and Georqual Tolliver.

Forward Sherry Nelson led the Lady Panthers with eight points. Michelle Braxton had five points and five rebounds. Alicia Mallett led Liberty with nine boards while Sharday Freeman collected six.

The Lady Mustangs finished with just 12 turnovers, with just three coming in the first half. WO-S finished 9-of-17 from the free-throw line while Liberty went a dismal 5-of-16.
