BrenhamFan
If the rain holds off, the Cubs will look to avenge their only district loss tomorrow against Magnolia West. If the Mustangs can manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice, they will place themselves in a great spot to get into the playoffs.

Monkeynuts
Montgomery seeks outright 18-4A title against Magnolia Montgomery coach Chris Morris hasn’t decided on his starting pitcher for Friday night’s regular-season finale against Magnolia.Likewise for Bulldogs coach Dale Westmoreland. The Bears are 24-4-1 overall and 13-2 in District 18-4A, and a victory over Magnolia would give them an outright 18-4A championship. The Bulldogs (16-16, 12-3) are also headed to the playoffs, and a victory over Montgomery could force a two- or even three-team playoff Saturday to determine postseason seeding.Such a scenario would test both teams’ pitching depth.“I preach to our guys that one game isn’t bigger than any other,†Bears coach Chris Morris said. “When we do that, we’re pretty good.â€Westmoreland said a possible three-way playoff between Magnolia, Montgomery and Brenham (22-9, 12-3) likely would be held in Bryan.Westmoreland said he plans to start either right-hander Kyle Black, lefty Mason Schuh or right-hander Lucas Sullivan against the Bears.Morris is looking at right-hander Mason Mize, lefty Ty Boland and right-hander Collin Garrett as his starting pitching options, although Boland has been used recently as a closer.“We could put Ty in any role and he’d adjust to it,†Morris said.Mize and Boland combined to scatter seven hits when Montgomery edged Magnolia 2-0 on March 28.The Bulldogs stymied Brenham 1-0 on Friday night. Black fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and catcher Cameron Salvaggio accounted for the only run with a fourth-inning homer.“We’ve pitched pretty well this season,†Westmoreland said. “We always emphasize pitching and defense.â€Mize has compiled some impressive statistics for the Bears. He’s 5-2 with a 1.07 ERA and has recorded 48 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings pitched.Boland is 3-1 on the mound and is batting .438 with 29 RBI. Garrett, meanwhile, is 7-1 on the mound with a 1.79 ERA.“If Magnolia wins, we have to turn around and play again Saturday,†Morris said. “That gives me a pretty good incentive (to win) … but the worst we can finish is a three-way tie for first place in the district.â€Magnolia reached the area round of the playoffs last season before getting swept in two games by Barbers Hill. Montgomery, meanwhile, reached the state tournament before losing to Rockwall Heath 6-3 in the semifinals. If the Bears can win the outright 18-4A championship, they would likely face Bastrop or Pflugerville Connally in the bi-district round of the playoffs.Morris would prefer a best-of-three series instead of a one-game playoff in the postseason, a testament to Montgomery’s pitching depth.“Our guys know coach Westmoreland’s teams are very good defensively,†Morris said. “One or two errors can get you beat in this game.â€Shortstop Garrett Hrozek, the Bears’ leadoff hitter, is batting .390 with 25 RBI. Will Fox, who hits second in the Montgomery batting order, is headed to play baseball at TCU. Fox is hitting .375. Jimmy Dominick (.413) and Boland usually hit 3-4 in the lineup.Brenham and Magnolia trail the Bears by one game in the 18-4A standings. The Cubs play host to Caney Creek on Friday. The Panthers (15-12, 10-5) clinched their first playoff berth since 2006 last week. They have an effective 1-2 pitching tandem in right-handers Kadon Simmons and Kyle Baird.Freshman Blake Helmer, one of Magnolia’s starting pitchers, isn’t likely to take the mound this weekend because of a foot injury. Westmoreland believes Helmer will be available for the playoffs. If there’s a three-way tie for first place, a coin flip will determine which team gets the bye in the playoff on Saturday. The winner of the first game would then face the team with the bye to determine the top seed.http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/courier/sports/montgomery-seeks-outright---a-title-against-magnolia/article_413940ee-642d-5158-acf2-ee138a2cfcbe.html
