Barbers Hill downs Lady Bears in bidistrict Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader PORT NECHES — Speed kills and the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears found out the hard way Tuesday night at Port Neches-Groves High School. The Barbers Hill Lady Eagles used their quickness all night long in a 61-42 win over LC-M in the Class 4A Region III Bi-district playoffs. LC-M finishes its season 15-16 after making the playoffs for the first time since 2001 and for the first time since Amanda Ellerbee took over the team. Barbers Hill (26-9) moves on to face the winner between Manor and Magnolia later this week in the area round. The Lady Eagles used a balanced attack to build a 33-8 lead at the half. Barbers Hill was off the races even in the first period. After LC-M senior Amber Soileau scored the game's first two points, Barbers Hill responded with a 15-0 run. Barbers Hill, who was led by 12 points from Morgon Anderson, led 19-5 after the first frame. Jasmine Carter had six points in the game's first eight minutes and she finished the game with eight. The Lady Eagles then used defense in the second period again to make sure they would lead by a comfortable margin at half-time. LC-M could only muster up three points in the second period while Barbers Hill scored 14. The Lady Eagles ended the second period on a 10-0 run. Jillian Coon, who finished with six points, had four in the period. After what must have been a very motivational speech by Ellerbee during the break, LC-M started to make things a little more interesting in the third. The Lady Bears, who were led by Ellen Williams' 12 points, outscored the Lady Eagles 16-14 in the third period. Katie Harrell scored all 11 of her 11 points in the third while Anderson scored six for Barbers Hill. LC-M was able to cut the score to 45-27 near the end of the third after which included a 9-0 run by the Lady Bears. Barbers Hill led 47-29 heading into the game's final eight minutes. Another 9-0 run in the fourth got LC-M to within 53-40. Barbers Hill buckets from Shannon Evans, who had nine points, and Anderson all but sealed the victory. Britney Gibbs led the Lady Eagles with eight rebounds while Shelby Apperson matched the total for the Lady Bears. Apperson finished with six points. Harrell and Hailey Christian each had six rebounds for LC-M. Jenna Silva added eight points for Barbers Hill while Kendall Shaw finished with six points.

Bobcats down WO-S to force third-place playoff Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — It was do-or-die time for the Orangefield Bobcats Tuesday night at Mustang Gym. Needing a win to force a third-place tie with West Orange-Stark, the Bobcats went into the Mustangs’ house and came away with a nail-biting 35-33 District 21-3A victory. That will set up another battle between the two Orange County schools to settle the final playoff spot out of 21-3A. The two will lock horns again Friday night at 7 p.m. at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School. Both teams played stifling defense all night but the jitters got the best of them in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats (19-14, 5-5) missed the front end of three conseuctive one-in-ones from the free-throw line in the last 0:53. However, the Mustangs (21-11, 5-5) just got one shot off during that stretch as they committed three of their 16 turnovers in the last minute, enabling the Bobcats to hold on. After Bryden Smith buried a three-pointer to give the Bobcats a 29-24 leading going into the fourth period, Orangefield was able to connect on just one field goal in the last eight minutes but it was good enough to fend off the cold-shooting Mustangs. Mustang senior Marquest Watson pulled the Mustangs even at 33-33 with a three-pointer with 4:20 remaining. But after that, only two points were scored the rest of the way as Orangefield got a free throw apiece out of Tyler Angelle and Derrick Evans. Guard Garrett Granger led the Bobcats with 10 points while Evans had nine. Zach Hayes contributed six points and five rebounds while Angelle also had five boards. Justyin Francis came off the bench to lead the Mustangs with 10 points and a game-high six rebounds. Donte Green had eight points and five boards for WO-S while leading scorer Watson was held to six points. The Mustangs finished with a 27-22 rebounding edge. Orangefield committed one more turnover than the Mustangs as they had 17. The Bobcats went just 8-of-15 from the free-throw line while the Mustangs were 4-of-6. The Bobcats jumped out to a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter with Evans and Hayes combining for nine points. Both squads scored eight points apiece in both the second and third periods.

You know, you Orangefield fans seem to think that Navasota was the one that cheated you guys last year. If I recall correctly, it was an official that let you guys down, not the Lady Rattler team. To me, Navasota has not done anything to warrant such bad feelings from Orangefield towards them. The Lady Rattlers did nothing wrong, they played hard like the Lady Bobcats did. I just hope that Orangefield fans frustrations from last year's game is not directed at the Navasota team. That would be wrong. You are correct AAW. And actually as I was reading back over the thread I realized that it probably came across in my post I blame the team for what happened to us last year. It's just that whenever you mention the word Navasota around OF over the last year that feeling we felt at the end of that game comes up for most of us. You are right, it isn't fair to the Lady Rattlers. But since it's playoff time, I hope we "put it on" every team we play from here on out. ;D It's time to kick it up a notch
