I've been out of the area for a while - Orangefield and HF ranked in a pre-season poll!? Love it!

Also a little surprised that United dropped so many spots. That national ranking tag I would assume had a little to do with it??

IMO, that national ranking is not a good representation but I also don't think there is 16 6A teams better than United. I believe they are a top 10 team. I was surprised they lost to Washington.

We have this conversation every year, but at what point does Silsbee's record hurt them?  I get that it's Silsbee Lite and all that, but some of their losses are to teams that aren't even very good.  I know, I know, they're going to be playing for a trip to state at the end of the year, and they play a tough schedule, but at I just feel that at some point 3-8 has to mean at least a little something.  Let them work their way back up in the rankings when they have their full team and are actually winning some games.

I tend to agree with you but just out of curiosity, what teams aren't good that Silsbee has lost to?

Here is the list:

Pasadena Dobie

PA Memorial

FW Wyatt

Bellaire Episcopal

Beaumont West Brook (twice)

Angleton

Dallas Madison

Well, they’ve played a rough schedule, but Wyatt is 1-5 and beat Silsbee by like 50.  Dobie is 8-9, and has a loss to Barbers Hill.  Episcopal is 3-5. Madison is 4-5.  So half of their losses are to teams with losing records.  Admittedly those teams have mostly played tough schedules like Silsbee, but they’re not beating the good teams they’re playing.  They’re not bad teams, but they’re not Duncanville or Faith Family either. West Brook is pretty decent, but half their wins are against a depleted Silsbee team and a mediocre LaGrange squad.  Angleton and PAM are playing pretty well so far, but I don’t think either has played a particularly impressive schedule to this point.  Point being Silsbee hasn’t lost to a bad team, but they’re not losing to truly great teams either.

I know they’ll be a different animal completely once the football boys get involved, and I believe they’ll be deserving of a top-5 ranking by the end of the season.  I expect them to make a run to state again, and will be rooting for them to do so. I just believe that results rather than potential has to play at least some part in the rankings.

Wyatt is #16 in 5A. Madison is #1 in 3A. Dobie is a very good team. Just watched them in YMBL. BTW, Barbers Hill is #18 in 5A. I would say the Episcopal game (a 10 point loss at Episcopal) was probably the worst loss. But Episcopal has played a very strong schedule so far.

The fact that Silsbee is only playing with a 1/4 of their varsity team against these good teams and competing quite well speaks volumes.

You definitely know more than me, no argument there.  Just kinda feels like a lot of the ranked teams beating Silsbee are ranked using similar parameters as Silsbee’s ranking: playing and losing to good teams and not being punished for the losses in the rankings.

It's an interesting situation.  What if they didn't look ahead?  Based exclusively on 2022-2023 performance to date, with no looking ahead, Silsbee doesn't belong in the top 25.  On this basis, not looking ahead, people might be wondering if perhaps the coach should have designed a softer preseason schedule.

By the time Silsbee starts winning consistently it will be in January and we'll be in district.  Nobody in district 19 except Silsbee is in the top 25.  That isn't going to impress pollsters who aren't looking ahead.  Silsbee would likely not end the season in the top 20.

I kind of like this scenario actually.  Nobody is much gunning for a team that isn't even ranked.  The Tigers would be the sleeper of all time.

But it's impossible.  Almost everybody from a semifinal team is coming back.  The coaches are smart, they know the realities of small town sports.  So they are looking ahead.  They can't help but look ahead.  And if we were voting we'd be looking ahead too.

What happened at Summer Creek to have them ranked so high this early in the season following up a 16-12 season with a 2nd round exit from the playoffs?  Move ins or something?

One transfer in but basically had their whole team back and most believed they were poised for a run this year. The addition of that transfer put them at another level. '6"5 guard from St. Pius that can really score.

    • That there’s not a single thread on the fact that the Republican nominee is on trial for paying off a porn star with whom he had an affair while the future First Lady was carrying said nominee’s child.    I remember back when the dirty, no-good Dems sacked Gary Hart over something similar. Same thing with John Edwards and later Anthony Weiner.    But y’all keep pretending God is on your side, lol.
    • I hear what you’re saying, BUT… that hammers the hell out of poor people and the ones with multiple properties don’t eat any more than the poor ones. In fact, you’d basically just be taxing a lot of peoples’ EBT payments. The government  can’t get ahead by taxing what they’re already borrowing to give to people.    I think well off people should pay more… but the scale as it exists is broken.    For the sake of argument, my mom’s house in Groves is valued at $125k. 2/1/1 on a slab.  Her tax bill is $850/year. Without exemptions, her bill would be 3200. It’s right on JCAD’s website. The problem is this…. If someone tries to rent out an identical house, they’d expect to get, what… $1200/month? If you take into account that homeowners/windstorm/flood is a minimum of another $2k per year, you’d need $5k a year just to cover the taxes and insurance. That’s four months (1/3 of the year) just to cover those costs, not counting a potential mortgage payment. But then everybody cries about how expensive rents are… you can’t tax the hell out of non-homestead property to make up for gifts given to homeowners in the form of big tax cuts. It just doesn’t work.    Ten acres in Lumberton? I’ve got a buddy with 10 acres in Lumberton on HWY 69. Prime property… it’s his retirement plan. Sale it one day and cash in. The CAD decided that it no longer qualifies for a special use valuation (timber) and stripped his “exemption.” His 2023 tax bill jumped from $25 to $22,000…. It’s insane.
    • I’m curious what happened… they aren’t even in full pads yet.
    • They’re going to have win almost all remaining games and get finals of tournament to think about an at-large. When LU was in the WAC, Grand Canyon got an at-large after New Mexico St came out of nowhere to win conference tournament. Grand Canyon had a dang good resume that year. It can happen, but resume wise isn’t in their favor.
