  1. Some folks have known but I will make it public. My time as a full time administrator/broadcaster is up. I told my wife of 33 years that when she retired from teaching that I would retire with her to the beach. She retired last May and I told her I would finish out the football and basketball seasons of this year then I would join her. (would have joined her in May but needed to stay on after the passing of our beloved admin WOSGrad). I am so ready to be a beach bum. I have enjoyed these past 17 years here on the site. I have seen it grow from just a little message board to now be considered a valuable media outlet. It truly has been a labor of love. First of all, I want to thank Jordan Wilson, the owner of this site, by inviting me on as a staff member and eventually an administrator. He trusted me with the help of running this site and allowed me to "do my thang" and start my broadcast career. It has truly been a blessing. Thanks I want to thank Todd Broussard (WOSGrad) who is looking down on us from heaven. He has been my partner in crime for all these years and is the reason this site is what it is today. He was the man!! I dearly miss my old friend and I hope that he is up there saying "job well done my friend". Thanks Todd for everything you did for me and this site. I want to thank all the staff members here. Particularly Lucas, Mack, Robert, Terry, Matthew and all of the other staff. You have helped make this the place to be as for Southeast Texas sports. Thanks for all the support over the years. Thanks to all the coaches that I have come to know and work with all these years. Thank you for your support and cooperation and your acceptance of me and SETXsports. I am truly grateful. Thanks to all the members here who really are what makes this site so great. I have become friends with several here and I cherish all the times we have spent on and off this site. God Bless all of you. I wish all and this site the very best. I will still be around some but it will be mostly from my chair on the beach with my toes in the sand holding a cold one. Thanks again to everyone and May God Bless.

  4. Mike as you end your career, a young guy like me is starting my own. I hope one day to have the same admiration and respect of my peers that you do. Hope you enjoy your retirement and can’t wait to see your posts on here from time to time!

    We still dancing!!!

They lost in the Elite 8 on Saturday night, what a ride that was. If you have a daughter that wants to continue to play basketball after High School, do not blow off Div 3 schools. Div 1 is obviously the big dogs, yes Div 3 does not pay “athletic money” but my daughter is getting an absolutely awesome education at a very very discounted price with grants and scholarships. She is having one of the best college experiences possible. My oldest daughter attends Texas A&M and tells us all the time that she wishes she was having the same experience as her younger sister.

  6. Sounds like a plan. Enjoy, you earned it. And thanks for your patience over the years for letting me slide with my sometimes outrageous ridiculousness.

  8. I would like to ditto what Hagar said. Not only has this site given us hours upon hours of entertainment, many of us have formed friendships here as well. In fact, I don’t know I would have met the aforementioned Hagar if it weren’t for site, and that is a friendship I very much treasure. I’m not sure what this website looks like in the future, because when I think of SETXsports, I don’t think of the HS basketball board or the college board, even though those are the two I routinely visit. I think of WOSGrad and AggiesAreWe. I will miss you both. But i will take solace that AAW and a cold beer are only a drive to the beach away. Enjoy your retirement my friend. You deserve it.

  9. How could you not include No Limit Payia.. That kid is special.. Dotson, Payia, Yates, Porchia will all return.. It’s 6 juniors and 5 sophomores on this years team.. They will be tough again because those reserves came in during the playoffs and balled.. Roach, Williams, Mickles and Anderson all got action in the playoffs

  12. Darrell did indeed get 2 "W"s against HH , when the DAWGS put those beat downs on them in 2014 & 2015. the two years Jasper was literally the smallest school in 4A DI.

  13. So now you are saying that Darrell was dumb all along, cause such doesn't happen over night. WOW. That's some "I hate being bi-polar. It's great!" type stuff right there. off your meds again? all the things you mentioned, were brought up and acknowledged throughout the season. so eat sleep, rave, & repeat. as it's been said the young men could only run what they were told and at times it looked as vanilla and generic as what we did in Middle school.

    PNG Hire

You do realize that Ned, PNG, and some other schools in this area (including Jasper) have been playing football for almost a 100 years and also started out in lower classifications right? In fact, there weren't even numbers on the classifications until the 1930s just letters. Jasper was in the same classification as PNG until 2004 and for a few years the same district.

  18. Toughest in state meaning....there is NO clear-cut frontrunner. Teams in the district are evenly matched or very close to evenly matched. There is no one team that year in year out that has an easy path to winning the district championship.
    1 point
  19. Im not sure you can say it was one of the toughest districts in the state when only one team won a playoff game. Maybe it is a little better than initially thought, but definitely not one of the toughest.

  20. In his interview with Coach Reyes the other day the reporter from Dave Campbell referred to our district as one of the toughest in the state. I thought that was kind of funny considering how everyone was saying it was such a weak district just about 3 years ago.

  24. I remember after Arceneaux hit the game winning shot everyone thought he was transferring. Just give it a rest guys, these are neighborhood kids, not kids playing from different cities or something like that. Homegrown kids who wanted to go to (at the time Central, Ozen or Brook) I don't think we will have to worry about transferring out to schools like IMG, Oak Hill or etc. like other schools do.

  27. so it appears like I said. I stand by that statement and I KNOW I am not alone. oh, that was one example I quoted. check out Jasper threads of their games here and at Smoaky. I am not gonna do it for you. With the junior high type offensive game play to some other that wasn't even that. our young men didn't stand a chance, by doing as they were told. so there ya go. (BTW, there were other seasons in games it "appeared to be the same)

  28. yep, sure have. including the best coach in program to this point, Gene Walkoviak. Some, not even that. Now, since you didnt pay attention I will explain to you as to why that was pointed out(apparently you don't realize) he spoke of the name Barbay and the success that is synonymous with it. Well, Curtis and Brian Barbay both lead teams to semi and finals appearances. I thought I clearly said the Barbay we had was unable to do so. the conversation was clearly about the name Barbay. not our program entire coach history.

Judging by what you guys were saying in the preseason, LU had players that could compete at that level before injuries and Covid blew it up. I'm confident that Brooks can get more talent on the roster going forward and that they'll be in good position to be in the upper half of the WAC consistently. People will disagree, but he'll figure it out.

Better watch yourself around here mentioning anything good Howard did...the trolls will come out and start to cry foul! I'd reach back out to Stan because the guy is still invested there. He'd be willing to ride the time out and do what's right by kids...but I don't know anything.

  34. Was with TxHoops when we first met at the Evadale gym. What amazed me, with all the people you come in contact with, you still remembered me years later. So drink enough cold ones to kill a few “grey cells”, you have plenty. Kudos to you and Todd for making this site the “go to” place for SETX information. I’ve spent, and continue to spend, countless hours on here, enjoying myself, and the great folks I’ve met here. So enjoy yourself. Wishing you and Mrs AAW all the best.

  35. Happy retirement Mike. Man, not may people get to make a career out of something they love, like sports. You blazed a trail. You have kept me informed. I love Silsbee Tiger basketball. I like football too but not nearly as much as basketball. Has it been 17 years? I guess so. I've been around for most of them. Before this board getting information on Silsbee sports was hard to do. The local Houston teams just don't excite me. Then the frustration ended. I would tweet on twitter. WOS would sometimes comment back. I didn't even know somebody was paying me attention. SE Texas fans have been blessed especially tiger basketball fans. You did a great job.

    Barbay leaving Jasper

You and I both know he didn't just pick up and leave for no reason. The politics in that town, especially in relation to athletics, are unbelievable. We can go back and forth on this, but there's no use. He's happy, Jasper is happy, so were just beating a dead horse. The "I Told Ya So" comment would be for the ones who would rather see him leave than stay. I hope that is not the case, but I've been around long enough to know the grass isn't always greener in these situations. Also, conceding games, come on man.

  40. Let me start with this. I personally don't know Thorton in any shape, format or fashion(that I an aware of). Can't tell ya if he/she has been to one, every or any Jasper Bulldogs football games. I do know Thorton has made some positive and supportive post on Jasper threads and the one particular post you quoted then responded with a confrontational tone was/is a fair reasonable post. Cause I am gonna tell ya right here and now Jasper fans including myself at sometime wondered the same thing. You know why? for the very reasons you named. The words clout, success, and tradition . I even said myself that when your last name is synonymous with a coaching legend it helps in regards to getting jobs. to think otherwise is foolish. Yes,Darrell had above .500 success before he got to Jasper and had earned his own way. While here he won alot of games and stayed in line with the winning tradition synonymous (I noticed you like that word) associated with the Barbay name. Tradition, success, by default brings with it EXPECTATIONS! Four out of 10 seasons Darrell coached here in Jasper he had the young men to go farther than the 3rd of playoffs '13,'14,17, and 18(BTW, the Silver&Blue ended two of those seasons). Myself,(and to make it clear don't let my current ID fool ya, I have been around this forum a pretty good while. I used to be JasperDAWG but I broke some rules and was shunned for a period) and the handful of true Jasper fans who regularly post here have NEVER bashed Barbay if anyone come close it was probably me. Have we questioned some things he did, of course. Just like fans of WOS did to Coach T and that man did nothing but in 11 short years as Coach there put together a hall of fame career. Since Darrell left, and I remind you he left on his own on a Thursday to take a job and start the Tuesday following. Yet, us Jasper posters [or maybe nit wits as you say] have made a point publicly to wish him well. after this past season where in 3 games (so badly that other teams fans said they felt bad for our players) Darell Barbay basically conceded games. I had mentioned he looked like a coach trying to get season over with so he could retire Then look what happened. So all the Barbay family tree you spoke of and the success. Guess what? the Barbay member we experienced has a third round ceiling, conceded games(so it appeared in multiple seasons), and then leaves our kids(yes we parents as well) on what 4-5 days notice. None of which are synonymous with the Barbay name. So how and/or why come November(ironically the month Darrell could NOT get us passed) will you be telling us " I told ya so" ?
