All of Shepherd’s coaches are Coldspring alum?  Hogwash!  There are 2 and only 2.

And when you say “led the JV in…” all I hear is “he’s too scared to play on varsity”.
Of all the Coldspring faithful, why can’t you admit that Shepherd is just better?  All of the years I’ve been on this message board you say kids aren’t being utilized correctly…
Y’all will go through ADs like socks but there’s one thing that consistently remains and that’s the fact that Coldspring is nowhere as close as they used to be athletically.  Bring Nick Saban or even Deion in and they’ll be lucky to win 4-5 games consistently.

You are correct. Parents buying in and supporting the program is key. That was fading when Barbay left, and went extinct. People are quick to throw we need to run the spread, but that’s been tried and was a fail

The guy that is at Whitney was brought in as a culture change. He left on his own after the super left.

Coldspring is a hard place to come and coach. There is some talent, but not the same talent that was here in the 90’s or 2009-2014 witch was the last years Coldspring made big playoff runs

I hate to tell you but the Trojan's do not have the same type of kids they had back in the 80', 90's and early 2000's. Not bashing but just not the same. We used to think of Coldspring as always reloading. Now it's a game that we think we can win every year. But you are correct the right coach could help change things, if that is what's the biggest problem.

And he did all that basically raw compared to what kids are using today with some of the bench shirts and squat suits.

Because Beaumont is a cesspool?  The entire city is apathetic?  It's more Western Louisiana instead of East Texas?
That entire school district is a septic wound that continually gets covered with a wart bandaid.  They keep making "upgrades" that "are best for the kids" but don't want to admit the adult decision makers are screwing it up for the kids.
I also noticed the question never mentioned if the infinite change in administration that can't allow for consistency.

Well, look what outside sources say:

Is Beaumont, TX a safe place to live?
According to CrimeGrade.org, Beaumont is listed in the 1st percentile for safety and crime. This rating means that 99% of cities nationwide are safer than Beaumont. The city’s overall crime score is an F. The city score is a composite of an “F” grade for violent crime and property crime and a “D-” for miscellaneous crime. Looking at these ratings and scores, Beaumont appears to be a very dangerous city.

????What has been their record since he left? Have they played less than 13 games in any season? Did they make it to the title game this year? Semi-Final 3 years ago? Seems like they are doing decent? Did Vance win the title every year? Did Vance's successor have the same winning %? or better?

Also, the new coach has done just as well as Vance. Vance did not win the title every year he was at LH.

    idk,
I would say your question is a very fair one. I think it's situational dependent but I will give you my take it on it.
First of all, I don't know the actual numbers but from the outside looking in Tarkington, doesn't have the money or isn't willing to pay well compared to other schools. Handcuff that with either the inability or unwillingness to invest in athletic facilities and that's a start as to why coaches who have any success would not want to stay long. I mean just the mention of spending money on just a fieldhouse to upgrade the dilapidated one that's probably been there since my father was in school there, certainly was there when i was there and that's been a while, and people lose their minds.
I mean 30-45 miles down the road, assistants are making close to or more than the AD/HC of the entire program. Considering just the normal headaches and additional responsibilities that comes with, who would want to deal with that for long unless you have some sort of ties to the area, school, etc???
The other scenario is you finally get a guy from the area to coach. Whether he does well or not, there is situational issues that have to be dealt with. People that you know well have kids in your program and you have to look those friends in the eye and tell them their kids don't deserve to start or worse don't belong on the team. People that you know don't like the play you picked or whatever and are now hollering from the stands, calling for your head because you didn't make the "right" decisions in their mind. I mean that's happening no matter where you go or who you are but it's likely a different feel when it's people you go to church with on Sunday or were at their house a couple weeks ago sharing your favorite beverages. Now you're getting paid less money, fighting the issues of less talent as a whole and having to look these people in the face day to day.
Finally, the last and worst situation which doesn't typically include any success is you hire a guy from somewhere else who comes in with a big stick that's going to shake things up. Comes in and wants to clean things up but starts rubbing everyone the wrong way and nobody knows who you are you. You start running kids off because their attitude isn't right or they aren't putting forth the effort. One or two of those kids have some talent but because of the small town, they've always been catered to and they aren't used to somebody holding them accountable so they leave. Then the program in general can't compete so you lose a few other good players and now everyone is calling for your head because nobody knows you and you "ruined" their kids senior or junior year.
Nobody wants to go through a rebuilding year or two or three in high school. 99% of these kids will never play a down after high school so no parents of or kids that are seniors want to be a part of decimation of a program even if it does benefit the future of the program. They can't look past the fact their high school kids career was a total waste. I mean what can we say we can't all be superstars like everyone on these forums. From all the high and mighty comments on this page, I'm sure everyone here played college or pro ball. Most were probably the best players to ever come through their program, just ask them........so I'm sure it's hard to relate to these issues.

    Let me start with this.
I personally don't know Thorton in any shape, format or fashion(that I an aware of). Can't tell ya if he/she has been to one, every or any Jasper Bulldogs football games.  I do know Thorton has made some positive and supportive post on Jasper threads and the one particular post you quoted then responded with a confrontational tone was/is  a fair reasonable post. Cause I am gonna tell ya right here and now Jasper fans including myself at sometime wondered the same thing.  You know why? for the very reasons you named. The words clout, success, and tradition .  I even said myself that when your last name is synonymous with a coaching legend it helps in regards to getting jobs. to think otherwise is foolish. Yes,Darrell had above .500 success before he got to Jasper and had earned his own way. While here he won alot of games and stayed in line with the winning tradition synonymous (I noticed you like that word) associated with the Barbay name.  Tradition, success, by default brings with it EXPECTATIONS! Four out of 10 seasons Darrell coached here in Jasper he had the young men to go farther than the 3rd of playoffs '13,'14,17, and 18(BTW, the Silver&Blue ended two of those seasons).  Myself,(and to make it clear don't let my current ID fool ya, I have been around this forum a pretty good while. I used to be JasperDAWG but I broke some rules and was shunned for a period) and the handful of true Jasper fans who regularly post here have  NEVER bashed Barbay if anyone come close it was probably me. Have we questioned some things he did, of course. Just like fans of WOS did to Coach T and that man did nothing but in 11 short years as Coach there put together a hall of fame career. Since Darrell left, and I remind you he left on his own on a Thursday to take a job and start the Tuesday following.  Yet, us Jasper posters [or maybe nit wits as you say] have made a point publicly to wish him well. after this past season where in 3 games (so badly that other teams fans said they felt bad for our players) Darell Barbay basically conceded games.  I had mentioned he looked like a coach trying to get season over with so he could retire  Then look what happened.
So all the Barbay family tree you spoke of and the success.
Guess what? the Barbay member we experienced has a third round ceiling, conceded games(so it appeared in multiple seasons), and then leaves our kids(yes we parents as well) on what 4-5 days notice.
None of which are synonymous with the Barbay name. So how and/or why come November(ironically the month Darrell could NOT get us passed) will you be telling us " I told ya so" ?

yep, sure have. including the best coach in program to this point, Gene Walkoviak. Some, not even that.
Now, since you didnt pay attention I will explain to you as to why that was pointed out(apparently you don't realize) he spoke of the name Barbay and the success that is synonymous with it. Well, Curtis and Brian Barbay both lead teams to semi and finals appearances. I thought I clearly said the Barbay we had was unable to do so. the conversation was clearly about the name Barbay. not our program entire coach history.

so it appears like I said. I stand by that statement and I KNOW I am not alone. oh, that was one example I quoted. check out Jasper threads of their games here and at Smoaky. I am not gonna do it for you.  With the junior high type offensive game play to some other that wasn't even that. our young men didn't stand a chance, by doing as they were told.
so there ya go. (BTW, there were other seasons in games it "appeared to be the same)

So now you are saying that Darrell was dumb all along, cause such doesn't happen over night. WOW.
That's some "I hate being bi-polar. It's great!" type stuff right there.  off your meds again?
all the things you mentioned, were brought up and acknowledged throughout the season. so eat sleep, rave, & repeat.
as it's been said the young men could only run what they were told and at times it looked as vanilla and generic as what we did in Middle school.

Darrell did indeed get 2 "W"s  against HH , when the DAWGS put those beat downs on them in 2014 & 2015.
the two years Jasper was literally the smallest school in 4A DI.
