ST413 Posted July 4, 2019 Report Share Posted July 4, 2019 This is a tuff question for me. And the big part that makes it that way is the way the qb positioning has evolved through the years. My view of a qb was that of a passer growing up now its more of the dual threat. Now i have to base my opinion really on the last 15 years or so as i dont really remember much farther back than that as far as standout qbs. And if you base it on that dual threat, I think you have to say Dontre was the best. He put up the numbers through the air and on the ground above anyone else. Now if you were going to look for that qb that could break it open at any time with his feet, it had to be Johnson just based on his speed. I still remember watching him split two safetys in a playoff game and make them look l8ke they were wearing leg cuffs chasing him down the field. His junior year, no. i recall that Coach McGallion has so little faith in Dontre's passing game in his junior year that he would platoon him with Chase Partain with Partain playing obvious passing downs. Besides.... we all know that JD wasn’t working with an all-time great receiver like Mackey. If you ask me, without Mackey, we wouldn’t even be discussing Dontre’s numbers. Will somebody please take responsibility for that “Mackey was the best receiver from SETX ever” post after his junior year? You can make a strong argument for either guy. It’s tough to just compare numbers because WOS was literally beating people to sleep both of those years. I don’t remember many games where Silsbee was punting on first down. WOS was calling the dogs off in a lot of games while Silsbee was going for two at the whistle. I miss good football. But don't make excuses or whine about having to play in the rain. We use a different criteria for excuses/whining in that case. Jack won one WOS lost one. Let it go. I don't scratch dry ****. Silsbee didn’t know how to utilize them. All that speed at WR and they didn’t have the numbers they should have. Carthage coach spoke with TRE after that game in 17. I was told he told him if you were on my team we will definitely keep the ball in your hands. Like they were supposed to do with that special talent. That game was weird because I believe that was his first fumble of the season in that game. Silsbee was within Carthage's 10 yard line. Was that the game that Carthage did a high short kickoff and all the Silsbee players just watched it hit the ground right in the middle of the field and Carthage recovered? scoopno1 Posted July 6, 2019 Report Share Posted July 6, 2019 I have been watching the tigers for about 30 years and have seen Brian Doss, Philip Lindsey, Jeremy Johnson, Patrick Reed, Dontre Thomas, Willie Jones and Sedrick Spearman. It is hard to compare them. If you look at what they accomplished at the college level then probably Lindsey, Reed and Jones were the best. Jones and Thomas both still have a story to write at Lamar. I would guess that Silsbee had some outstanding quarterbacks in the 60's and 70's that I never saw or heard about. It is hard to compare players from different era's. coach bear Posted July 7, 2019 Report Share Posted July 7, 2019 Been looking for an old timer to mention a name of someone I played against, William Arline I believe, QB from the 77 Silsbee team that beat us , Marlin Bulldogs, at Stephen F in the second round. He was explosive and scored from about 60 out late in the fourth to re take the lead and beat us. He may not be the same caliber as later quarterbacks, but he was dangerous. This silsbee team also had Graham, Schankle ( future horns) Eddy Roby and Craig Mcgallion. Donnie Little and Dickinson beat them the next week by a touchdown in the dome on the way to the state championship. We were so heartbroken especially when we found out the dome was the predetermined site of the next game in 3A playoffs. The DOME in the 70’s was a big deal.
