The Demise of the Electoral College

TDS is causing the end of the Electoral College.  Soon, California and New York will decide who’s president.  Not a scenario I’m happy with.  Basically, if you can’t win by the rules, change the rules.   Anyone else see this as a crisis?   Once again, the thought Texas seceding from the Union, pops into my head.

As I understand it, if in 2016, if the folks in Connecticut voted for Trump, Hillary would still have gotten their Electoral Votes, since she won the National Vote.  This group National Popular Votes Interstate Compact, has 172 votes locked into the National vote.  It only takes 270, so they’re only 98 Votes short.  Just like eating an elephant, one bite at a time.

Isn't that unconstitutional? Was it not set in stone that the electoral college would keep less populated states on an equal playing field?

It’s mentioned in the Constitution, but I don’t think how it’s done is mandated.  I wish someone more familiar with this would chime in.

Only five US presidents in history have been elected despite losing the popular vote: John Quincy Adams in 1824, Rutherford Hayes in 1876, Benjamin Harrison in 1888, George W. Bush in 2000 and Donald Trump this November.

I do NOT agree with replacing the Electoral College.

It was honestly done because at the time of the constitutional congress, news traveled exceptionally slow. It took days to tally votes locally... the electoral college gave a transparent way to show locals that their voice was being heard, instead of some shady backroom tally like the ones in FL in 2000. It was done so that a rep from South Carolina could get on a horse and go to the capital and express the will of his people at a later date.

And also to make sure that calmer heads could prevail if we all took our freedom to seriously and elected a whacko.

Thanks.  After more research, evidently the Constitution doesn’t require a criteria for how the State Electoral Votes are cast, so these States allocating all their votes to whomever gets the most popular votes in the National tally, is legal unless/until someone challenges it in court, and it works its way up to the SCOTUS for interpretation.  If it’s not overturned, in the not so distant future, New York & California will essentially be electing our presidents.

Where’s the crying emoji?

I don’t want to sound all negative, but we’re screwed (at least in my way of thinking) regardless. Recent studies show that 4 out of 10 Americans look favorably upon socialism. Those aren’t the old ones.... it’s just a mathematical certainty that as the older voters die,, they’ll be replaced by more voters who were raised to receive a trophy just for showing up. They’ll vote for any and every big tax project (See Nederland bond issue) with no regard for cost or consequences. Just that the reward is somehow “deserved.”

Whether it’s a poor family that believe they deserve food, shelter, cash, and a phone... college graduates that believe their college debts should be forgiven.... or retirees who can’t correlate the amounts of their SS/Medicare contributions to the actual cash outlays in today’s dollars... or immigrants coming here to enroll in our benefits programs. We’re in trouble, and the electoral college isn’t going to matter much longer.

Well said.  A summation of our current predicament that many of us have anticipated for years.  Also the reason many of us consider seceding from the Union as our last grasp at Freedom.  The Pro’s & Con’s have been discussed here at length.  Will there be some sacrifice?  Most certainly.  Will the US go to war with us?  Not likely.  First, can’t imagine them doing it.  Second, one in nine of our military is from Texas.  Is the thought of seceding crazy?  Yes, but it’s craziness that’s brought us to this point.  Jmo
