Some of us do get by on just that salary.  I did for a long time: 22 years.  The last 5 have been much better since I moved to Alief.  Still if I do not work summer conditioning or teach summer school, I am under 78,000 a year. Includes two coaching stipends.  I gripe about the money for sure, but I love what I do, so we make it work out.

There isn't a way to persuade someone with genuine experience to go there and work.  I'm sure they get a lot of young coaches, coaches at the end of their career, or maybe someone having a hard time finding a coaching job anywhere else.

Im sure there are a few but I know alot arent. I am not even sure what your point is. You must just like posting I guess.

I’d have to disagree with you. 40k and you take verbal abuse from students. Your grading papers after school. God forbid Little Susie failed a test and Momma Becky needs to speak to a teacher ASAP. It’s not fun trust me. They do it to try to create successful members of society.

lol What are you talking about? I dont need an education to work a shut down or be a logger. I do happen to need one though to educate your kids and if you find a teacher who isnt working weekends then point me in the direction of that school that is that lax on planning. Now lets say I coach a sport or any other kind of activity. Well there goes those weekends and summers. from August till Christmas most coaches will work 7 days a week for a small stipend(thats just football, im not even counting spring sports). Considering a bunch of coaches and teachers are leaving to go work those shutdowns in the plants to make 2 to 3 times what they made as teachers and work less and not near as hard. I wouldnt call it a part time gig.. But hey buddy go get your degree and then student teach for a half a year unpaid and then take the state test which will cost you and then take your content test and become a teacher and work this part time gig. Their is a HUGE Teacher shortage and I would love for you to come step onto any of our campuses and show us what you got.

Every year cardinal backer says something along these lines. He is doing it on purpose to get attention. He won’t change his mind even when facts are presented with documentation. I believe last years insult to teachers was that all teachers are over paid baby sitters. 

Someone is lonely and just wants attention from people online.

If you went to school and got a bachelors degree so that you could take up a part time job that you’re really, REALLY passionate about... that’s not my problem.

i’ll get you on board with the “teachers aren’t paid enough” argument when they start going to school all year. Until then all arguments to the contrary are a joke.

Can you imagine a scenario where you’d complain directly to your boss in a public forum that you deserve more money? Or that others would chime in and harangue your employer that you deserve more money. Instead of griping about pay, teachers should be thanking the public for financing their lazy lifestyle.  

Heres the deal. I have a job (like most people) that is directly to my production. If I want to make more money, make more widgets... or promote into managing widget makers... or start my own widget company. 

Teachers have no quanitifiable product... and they don’t want one. That’s why they hate the STAAR test. It’s not about having to “teach for the testing” it’s because standardized testing FINALLY holds teachers accountable for their own performance. Then all of the teachers scream “we can’t help it... blame the parents!”

Teachers collectively overestimate the value of their profession.

babysitting = $10 dollars a hour X 30 kid = $300 per hour now most teachers teach 6-7 classes so i'll say 6 hours. 

300 per hour X 6 hours = 1,800 dollars a day. 

1,800 X 180 contract days = 324,000. 

I wish I was paid like a babysitter, now before you get all upset, I don't think teachers should get 300,000 a year. I do think they deserve more than 40,000 somewhere between 70-100. A teacher shouldn't have to work three jobs to make ends meet. This math was brought to you by my 3rd grade math teacher. The reading and writing comprehension from all my English teachers. Thank you.

I've known a few teachers in those districts and their other half works for the railroad, refineries or oilfield and make good money.

You aren't understanding my point that a teacher making $40K/yr is more than likely not supporting an entire family (spouse/kid(s)) with that salary alone?  I won't waste my time explaining any simpler than that...I don't think I could anyway.

To be fair... working 6 months of out of the year in an environment where there are literally potential life-threatening explosions for 12 hour days doing back-breaking labor is probably worth three times more.  At least.

you could make the argument teachers are the most valuable profession given they provide all other areas of the workforce with their talent

I'm definitely not saying you're wrong.  There wouldn't be doctors without teachers...but should teachers make more money than doctors?  In my opinion, no.

Again I don’t think they should make more than doctors but I will argue for a livable wage in today’s economy. Like in the 70,000 - 100,000 range is reasonable to me. A teacher shouldn’t have to also work at dominos or Walmart at night to support their families. Can we all agree that everyone’s jobs are important. We need welders we need doctors we need construction but we also need teachers. Ask any community that had teachers walk out what it’s like when teachers stop teaching. You don’t realize you need something till it’s gone.

Actually, it's not our or anyone else's opinion concerning the salaries of teacher, doctors, oil field workers or anyone else.  We live in a capitalist economy where supply/demand drives everything.  The demand for medical field employees is much higher so they get paid more.  Just like their services cost more.  As long as there are teachers willing to work for 40K/year then that's what they will get paid.  Maybe teachers should just walk away or refuse to work and then we'll see how important an education really is.  Or not.  It's whatever to me.. I also know a lot of teachers that are perfectly happy with how much they get paid.  We are, in fact, talking about the salary at West Hardin.  Other schools pay a lot more so teachers could go to work somewhere else.

you cant apply capitalist ideals to socialist ideas like public education

but the salary is part of the reason WH struggles to find teachers
