It takes a village to raise a child.  This is a high price to pay, but I think it worth it.  We must continue to upgrade the school facilities to keep up with an ever changing world.  Like someone said earlier,  it's not going to get any cheaper.

The football stadium upgrades will in time save money on upkeep.  Bathrooms are a disgrace.  Nederland is one of the last districts in 5A (that regularly go to the playoffs) that play on grass, mud etc.

Quoting Hillarious Clintonista!   Not a good way to start your comments!   :)

Right or wrong, we all have to pay for services we don't use. We could both provide a long list of things. As I stated earlier, we all benefit in someway from public education. Is 156,000,000 a lot of money? Heck yea. Could it be done cheaper? Probably.

No offense, but you'd probably still be against a bond half that size.

Interesting!  Thanks!  More ammunition.  What a shame though.  If this is true, I wonder if the board has made this clear to the elderly?

I made a mistake and what I said was incorrect in that it applies to all of the other taxing entities except school districts..... I'm deleting that post.

This statement is from NISD website

If the bond issue passes, will the tax rate for our senior citizens be increased? No. Taxpayers who are age 65 and older and have filed the appropriate tax exemption will not see an increase in the school taxes they pay on their home. The exemption “freezes” the amount of school taxes they pay at the time the exemption is filed.

I'd like to see the bond pass.  I still have one left in school and would like to see him benefit from a new High School.  According to him there isn't enough room to squeeze in anymore students and the condition of the building is really deteriorating because of the overcrowding and age of school. I have been to the high school on many occasions in the past several years and I understand the frustration of needing justified improvements whether, structural, safety, educational, etc. and everyone agrees it needs to happen, but don't want to pay for it.  So if you need to expand your house because your family is growing, or you need a security system to protect your family, or a new roof, or ..... well you get where I'm going with this, you would take out a loan and pay for it because your family means everything to you right?  Well, isn't that basically the same concept here .... our community family needs to expand the schools to house our kids, keep them safe in a structurally sound environment, provide better technology equipment, security systems, comfortable classroom learning environment for students and teachers, oh my gosh I could go on and on but I know you guys reading this are definitely understanding what I am saying here. Although I completely believe education needs are and should come first, I do back making improvements to our stadium.  The stands need to be expanded on the home side, bathrooms are unsuitable, lighting is unsafe under the stands, I witnessed an elderly person fall and break their nose because it was so dark near the restrooms and couldn't clearly see the sidewalk.  My brother is in a wheelchair and when we take him to the games he can't sit in the designated handicapped seating because it's literally the first row where everyone walks by the railing and they step on his feet and run into him and can't even see the game because of all the traffic, so the police move him to the track where it's a little better but when you are at field level you can't see anything going on so my heart goes out to all of our handicapped community trying to watch their child, grandchild, niece, nephew, etc. participating in the game, band, cheer, drill team, track, soccer, etc.  I'm really not saying anything that hasn't been said before in prior bonds and the current bond.  For the life of me, I can't understand why our community doesn't want to support these improvements.

Here's the rub... Beaumont ISD had a monster bond at $389 million.  This one is for ONLY $156 milly.

When you look at it in relative terms, There are are 117,000 people in Beaumont.  If you take the 389 million price and divide it by the number of citizens of Beaumont (not even including the people outside of the city limits) you end up with a price per citizen of $3,324 per person.

Nederland on the other hand has 17,000 residents AND is asking for 156 million.  It's more like $9,176 per person.

In plain English, if Beaumont's bond issue (already considered massive) compared to Nederland's on a cost per citizen basis, it would have been more like 1.2 billion dollars. When you consider how how much bigger Beaumont's tax base is (refineries, commerical, industrial, retail, maritime, etc...) you can see how bad the property owners in a bedroom community like Nederland are about to get smacked.

Call it for what it is... there are some Bulldog faithful who are tired of getting shown up by the facilities on the other side of town, and they're willing to spend however many of their neighbors dollars to fix the situation.

The one thing nobody is mentioning is that Nederland isn't growing... It's a completely different ballgame when your a Magnolia or Tomball and your population is exploding. Big Ned isn't getting any larger.

Klein likes to throw around the population of Nederland a lot, and even when corrected still doesn’t admit that NISD serves a lot more people than those that reside within the city limits.  Parts of Bmt, PA, PN, and those with Nederland addresses that are out of the city limits also attend NISD.  Hell, the Bug Man on Spurlock that you mentioned is not in the Nederland city limits.

17,547 was the population from the 2010 census done 9 years ago.  I assume with all of the new Apartments, duplexes, and single family houses built this decade, that number will increase a good bit on next year’s census.

Now add all of the people that live in Stonegate, Central Gardens, Highland North, Beauxart Gardens, Dominion Ranch, Stillwater, Greenhill, Minaldi Place and many other areas that reside in Nederland Independent School District.  That is significantly more people that the numbers you and Klein like to throw out there.

This is the only sink in the men’s bathroom on the home side.  Do you know how many nasty ass hands I shake every Friday night?  I probably should start wearing gloves to the games.

I’ve read there are only 12 5a schools still playing on grass.  Nederland and Vidor are the only 2 in our district.

That in itself is laughable; lots of folks in setx still living in the 90’s. Come on Nederland; get with the program. Your kids deserve better.

Absolutely hugh amount of dollars.  It’s been my observation that to many Districts let their needs go too long before dropping a Bond Issue.  I don’t live in Nederland so I have no idea if this Bond fits that description.  Regardless, if that is the case or not, and regardless of what any outsider says, it’s the folks in Nederland who’ll make the decision.  I don’t envy them the choice.  Durned if you do, and durned if you don’t.

If Nederland keeps kicking this can down the road, the price tag is only going to get higher...10 years ago, it would have cost $126 million to pretty much have ALL new schools...now, $156 million for one school replacement and fixes to the some of the others...this has to be done sooner or later...later just means way more $$...I hate spending money as much as the next guy, but the reality is that you are already spending large sums of money on maintenance of old, dilapidated buildings that are 70 and 80 years old in many cases...I would rather spend my money on something new and up to date than maintaining something 80 years old that doesn't meet the needs of today's education system

Liking the chances of the bond passing....Not so sure the Athletic or stadium improvements will but,  the construction and refurbishing part seems like it will be a go....jmo.

At first stadium bond was kinda dead.. as of late it’s picking up steam... from what I was told people are upset though that the big 17 mil athletic bond isn’t a option and would have a greater chance then just strictly bulldog stadium bond because it covers all sports. I am kinda baffled that they wouldn’t include the building new dressing room idea to the stadium bond... visitor team has to go the girls locker room. The dogs are cramped up inside central middle, can’t really call anything there own, outdated, old, pathetic.

I know I don't have a dog in the fight. No pun intended. My two cousins are teachers and I have a whole slew of family in the Nederland school district. I have been asking all of my Nederland friends to vote yes.

If they have money left over, dressing rooms are one of the things on the list.

Yep, that pretty much covers it.   This can has been kicked down the road for so long that the need keeps increasing along with the price.   Kick it down the road again and it will keep going up.

People don't realize what a ridiculous set of circumstances has to occur on the Friday of a home football game; my disclaimer here is that I assume this is still the same as it was in years past; my comments here are based on a conversation I had with Coach Neumann before he retired, but I assume the same still has to happen now.

On the Friday of a home game, NISD staff has to completely clear out the dressing room at the stadium that is used on a day to day basis by the Central MS kids;  the dressing room is cleared to make room for the varsity football players and their equipment; at the same time, the football equipment/uniforms are loaded up from the high school and transported to the now vacant MS dressing room;  when the game is over, keep in mind late at night, this process is reversed so that the middle school kids are ready to go for Monday and the HS football players have their equipment back at the HS on Monday as well; it's a fiasco for every Friday home game because the HS football team does not have a dedicated dressing room/field house at their HOME stadium; but hey, who really needs that luxury of having their own dressing room??
