2018 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

KIRBYVILLE WILDCATS

 2017 Record: 3-6 Overall, 2-4 District

5th Place in 11-3A-I

By the standards of the folks in Kirbyville, the 2017 season was an unsuccessful one as the Wildcats failed to earn a playoff berth.  This brought a number of changes in the off season as former assistant Craig Jones returns to Wildcat land after a year away.  Jones will have a lot of new faces to help him get Kirbyville back to its rightful place, in the 3A-I playoffs.

Head Coach: Craig Jones

Offense

Junior Dilynn Bishop will lead the Wildcat attack at quarterback.  The Kirbyville attack should be potent as senior running backs Tylon Cooper (2nd team all-district) and Cam Smith will lead the way.  Junior back Hayden Sharp will also contribute.  Senior wideout James Burchett and sophomore Hunter Wallis (2nd team all-district) will pace the Kirbyville passing attack.

Defense

Sharp will pace the Wildcat front seven from his linebacker spot.  Bishop (2nd team all-district) will anchor the Wildcat secondary, which will feature Cooper and Wallis.

Special Teams

Burchett (1st team all-district) will handle the kicking duties for Kirbyville.

Sept. 7 - at Lumberton, 7:30 pm

Thats a tough predistrict schedule. KV will take some lumps for sure, but it will make them stronger in the long run. I can see KV returning to the playoffs, fighting for 3rd or 4th place.

HUH ? Who are you leaving out ? Kirbyville has to play Hardin in Hardin - and I dont think Hardin will give that game up. Kirbyville will be 6th or 7th place

I agree that they will beat warren and anahuac.....what do you know about hardin that i dont know? i did my research from last season. they lost to lamarque in the 4th quarter and played ec tight until late in the 3rd qtr....and was told they should have beat anahuac - no excuses though as all 3 were losses, but i hear hardin is much better and return a bunch of kids -2 move ins that come from very large schools that are both skill kids with the whole line returning - maybe kirbyville does to ?

Yes I’ve heard of the move ins and should help Hardin, I just always question their non district schedule to prepare them for district. Kirbyville on the other hand plays a state champion and a really tough Lumberton bunch that returns everyone just about.

Confidence...Kirbyville will have 4-5 losses by the time they play Hardin. While Hardin will be 4-1 and more than likely healthier. Kirbyville whoever made their schedule was a complete idiot.

PNG JV would of whipped Hull-Daisetta, West Hardin, Warren, and possibly last years Kirbyville team. Its not like they played Baytowns JV team.

I would much rather be battle tested and bruised than having played a powder puff schedule.  Look what it got Hardin last year is all I’m saying. 4-1 then 0-5 in district

Truth is they would of been 0-10 again without the schedule change. Playing bruisers doesnt mean you beat La Marque or Hitchcock. You will see with Kirbyville. What your saying has merit when you are talking about state contenders not teams that traditionally never goto the playoffs.

Kirbyville will not be battled tested from playing Newton. That will be a complete butt whipping from start to finish. Just because you play a good team means you will be battled tested. Who cared if Hardin played PNG's JV. That's not a slouch JV in a 5A district and Hardin is a struggling 3A team. Talent was probably close to equal. If I'm Kirbyville I wouldn't want Newton or Lumberton on my schedule if I'm looking for battle tested and I wouldn't want Legacy or Kipp if I'm Hardin, but if I had to choose I would much rather be the team giving the butt whipping than the one taking it.

Beating those 2 powder puffs proves what and does what for your program? I see Kirbyville getting absolutely destroyed the first 2 games but it’s a reminder that that don’t play anyone like them down the road so what ever is thrown at them they should be able to endure. With the exception of EC and Woodville still even those two not on the same pedistal as Newton or Lumberton

Kirbyville has been through a LOT in the last yr. A lot more than most schools ever had to go through. So no, we're not the state title contenders we were not so long ago. And no, we can't beat Newton...even though we've had the teams to do it as recently as 3 yrs ago. The talent is here, we just have to move a couple mountains first. Going into this yr reminds me of how it felt going into the 2011 season. (That was the 1st yr of the post-Alvarez era). Nobody had any clue what to expect. Same as this yr. I honestly have no idea what we'll do in district. All I know is we WILL show up and we WILL play hard. That's all I know. I stand behind my team.

Kirbyville will not make playoffs.  They will be bottom 2 in the district.  Who all do they beat to get 3rd or 4th? I don't see it happening.

Two things about KV's chances.

It appears all the KISD drama has passed and a new (former) coach is in place. The team is getting a fresh start and the community is too, as far as I can tell.

Additionally, its a pretty low bar to get into the playoffs in 11-3A-I. EC and WV will take 1&2, and there will be a scramble for the 3 and 4 spots. It just won't take much to slip in.  JMO.
