We are what can be termed as a true Golden Age of sports in Southeast Texas and have been since about 2014.  Rarely, if ever, has the area seen this concentration of local teams competing at, and winning at, the state level.  Here are the teams that have captured state titles or competed at the state tournament:

State Champions

2014-15 - Huffman Hargrave (4A Softball)

2015-16 - West Orange-Stark (4A-II Football), Hardin-Jefferson (4A Girls Track)

2016-17 - West Orange-Stark (4A-II Football), Silsbee (4A Basketball), Beaumont Legacy Christian (TAPPS 3A Girls Basketball), Port Neches-Groves (5A Baseball)

2017-18 - Newton (3A-II Football), Port Arthur Memorial (5A Basketball), Silsbee (4A Basketball), Liberty (4A Softball), Dallardsville Big Sandy (2A Baseball)

State Finalists

2014-15 - West-Orange-Stark (4A-II Football), Newton (3A-II Football), Ozen (5A Basketball), Dallardsville Big Sandy (2A Basketball), West Orange-Stark (4A Baseball)

2015-16 - Silsbee (4A Basketball), East Chambers (3A Basketball), Jasper (4A Girls Soccer)

2016-17 - Barbers Hill (5A Girls Basketball), Dallardsville Big Sandy (2A Baseball), Beaumont Kelly Catholic (TAPPS Class 6A Baseball)

2017-18 - West Orange-Stark (4A-II Football), Beaumont Legacy Christian (TAPPS 3A Girls Basketball)

State Tournament

2014-15 - Kountze (3A Basketball), Jasper (4A Girls Soccer)

2015-16 - Dallardsville Big Sandy (2A Basketball), Crosby (5A Girls Basketball)

2016-17 - Jasper (4A Girls Soccer)

2017-18 - Leggett (1A Basketball)

And the above are just the team titles from the area.  This does not include the individuals who have medaled at state track meets, weight lifting meets and the like.

Finally, the best, part.  This Golden Age is far from over.  Even for the remainder of this year, there are a number of teams that are a threat to make it to Austin or Round Rock.  Next year, Newton and Silsbee could be considered favorites to repeat, West Orange-Stark a threat to reclaim a title and a number of area teams looking to step into the state championship spotlight!

    • Yeah I remember the pictures of the water piled up on the north side of the highway, it was bad.
    • That’s a president? How embarrassing.
    • Really good hire! As I stated previously on this thread, Mike T has been an essential part of WB’s success the last few years & is a student of the game & I have a ton of respect for how he goes about things as a coach. Big on teaching kids how to do things the right way to prepare them for not only basketball but the game of life. He’ll be fine there, my only question is what kind of talent does WB have returning?  Best thing about this situation for Mike T is WB will be 5A for at least the next 2 years, so he should win a lot of games & have some deep playoff runs.
    • So which coaches kid gets the QB job? Trotter or Barrier
    • A Winnie land owner (and others) sued the State of Texas after they built IH-10 a few feet higher in order to help contain storm flooding. Sure enough a hurricane hit and flooded the land. The storm improvements worked!! Unfortunately the state sacrificed several people’s properties in using the interstate highway as a dam.  Richard DeVillier tried to sue Texas under our laws and Constitution and the US Constitution under the Fifth Amendment “taking clause” (eminent domain). After a favorable ruling in the federal district court on the right to sue Texas directly, the Fifth Circuit Court in New Orleans overturned that ruling and said that the DeVlier had no authority to sue Texas directly.  On Tuesday a unanimous US Supreme Court ruled that DeVillier and others had the right to sue Texas directly under Texas law and under the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution. The case is now sent back down to the lower court. DeVillier and others have not won their lawsuits as the case has not been decided on its merits at a trial. He still has to go to prove his case. What they did win was a unanimous Supreme Court agreeing that he has the right to bring Texas to trial for taking his property with just compensation.
