Santa Fe  was 4-4 last year, but their losses were to Manvel, FB Marshall, Texas City and Galveston Ball.   Manvel went to state,  FB Marshall was 9-2 and made it to the 4th round, and TC got knocked out by PNG in the second round.  Ball made it to the second round before losing to PAM.  So their losses were all to playoff teams that made at least decent runs.

That is why I think PNG struggles to make the playoffs. This is a very deep District and I don't think PNG matches up real well with a number of teams. RJ is the only saving grace because he can beat you in so many ways.

We played Santa Fe last season. They were a very solid team. Not a ton of athletes all over the field but enough to play well enough to win. I think they could surprise and play for the 4th spot.  Dont see them getting any higher though.

Based on recent success, returning talent, tradition and coaching I see it like this:

1. Crosby

2/3. Nederland/Barbers Hill

4. PNG/Dayton/Vidor/Santa Fe

8. Lee

I think that everyone is giving Crosby a little too much credit this year. They lost a lot of talent from last year's team and the JV didn't fair too well last year. Don't be surprised if Crosby is not the team they have been the last few years.

I'd be cool with that. It is one of those, believe it when I see it type things though.

If they have a good coach then they'll do like WOS -- reload!

You have to look at the big picture.

Yes they lost some key components to last years team. But, they played a number of Sophomores on Varsity at some important positions. Not only did these young players get some valuable experience, they also allowed some other players to get experience at the Junior Varsity level. Now this may have not translated to victories at the JV level, but it did allow a number of kids to grow and get better. Crosby will be real good next year.

I watched the big picture. Hand the ball to squirl or throw it to Cedrick Patterson and hope the defense can hold the opponent to less than 100 points.

And exactly what is the complete opposite situation? Are you saying they didn't lose a lot of talent and the JV won the majority of their games?

What I’m saying is this year was supposed to be our down year because our whole defense graduated except for one starter, and even that starter went down with a broken collar bone which forced them to play a freshman. Now we have a very experienced defense coming back. Also Not to take away from what Patterson and Williams did those kids were awesome but Jaiden Howard ran that offense with precision and Williams rarely had to face 8 in the box. Crosby will reload at the skill positions on offense. The offensive line is always good. Coach Riordan is a smart man and very good coach and he wouldn’t have hand picked this brutal schedule if he wasn’t confident in what he has coming back.

When has that not been the way Crosby has played offense? We've always had somebody to hand it to and somebody to throw it to. I will report that we just received news that the paperwork got approved for a transfer receiver that's rated even higher than Patterson was and should be Howard's top target this year, kid is the truth from what I've seen so far. We lost Craig but don't be surprised if the two running backs that replace him both rush for over 1,000 yards. From the offensive skill standpoint, this looks to be the fastest team Crosby will put on the field since Riordan has taken over. Not saying we'll average over 50 for the third time under Rio, but as usual points won't be the problem.

We knew the defense would be bad before the season started but I don't think anybody knew it would be the worst in school history, or at least that I can remember. Luckily those youngsters gained some experience and should only improve. We also picked up our usual haul of free agents that should infuse the defense with more speed and talent. It's a big IF, but if Crosby can figure our how to at least slow teams down on the defensive side of the ball they should be pretty dangerous with the skill players we have.

As for Barbers Hill, I like the new qb transfer y'all got from Clear Falls. Don't think he's the runner that Cauthen was but he looks like he can throw the deep ball pretty well which is all BH does now anyway. BH also has a trio of returning receivers that should be competing for all district spots to go with Spencer Long who's pretty solid when given an opportunity. That being said, if this new qb doesn't pan out I could see BH missing the playoffs again. I would imagine some of the shine starts wearing off Westeberg at that point.

*Don't take too much stock in those jv games. Crosby has won or shared four consecutive district championships and our jv probably hasn't won over four games in any of those seasons.

I have such a hard time trying to figure this district out...

As long as Roschon is the QB of PNG they have to be favorites IMO.

Crosby will not be as explosive as it was last year, but the system works and we are pretty darn good when we play within that system. Our defense will get better (it really couldn't get worse.) Our O-Line sounds like it's gonna be good for our system. No Craig Williams or Cedric Patterson's on this team. The Wide-out from Sterling moving in sounds interesting but that's one of those time will tell pieces. I think we will be solid at the RB position but again he's not Craig. Wide-outs I like, and feel confident Crosby will keep getting kids that can catch the ball.

Crosby's success this year will revolve around 4 factors for me.

D-Line has to get bigger, stronger and meaner to play in this district and with our preseason schedule.

Dbacks have to play better this year.

Can our O-line open holes for the running game. It won't be like last year where after .5s Craig is already in the third level, and our Wide outs are going to have to block at a solid level to help us spread the field even more.

Howard he has to make the smart reads and distribute the football if he tries to do to much he will kill any chance we have to win. No Mannie style QB play that will get him killed and will hurt our offense, so far he's shown the ability to do this and do this well.

>this looks to be the fastest team Crosby will put on the field since Riordan has taken over.

Update on the reporting from yesterday afternoon. The leading rusher in the SETX coverage area, Calvin Hill, is now enrolled in Crosby High School. Paperwork still needing to be approved. I will also report that this may not even be the biggest move Crosby makes.

Is this the kid from Baytown Sterling?

I know you're a teacher at the school so you think you know things, but one question. How did that best team in Crosby history thing work out for you last year? Go look at the final rankings now compared to the 2013 season and you'll see exactly what I was trying to explain to you and why your ranking system was flawed.

Who cares if we have Craig? Other than the Twins senior year the most effective we've run the ball under Riordan was in 2014 when we didn't even have a 1,000 yard rusher for the first time in over a decade. Craig's senior year was very nice, Austin Walter still blew every single season number Craig posted this year away except for tds. Calvin Hill would no doubt be a help but effectively running that ball doesn't depend on having a stud running back.

Odd you say that if Howard tries to do too much he will kill any chance to win but RJ and PNG does absolutely everything and you say as long as PNG has him their the favorite. Statements seem conflicted to me. Howard makes better decisions with the football than any other qb we've had since Kellen Haynes. You probably weren't even watching Crosby football back then though? PNG struggled to score 24 points on 4-6 Texas City the week after they beat Crosby. That goes to show we had a defense problem, not a PNG is great because of RJ issue.

As far as a faster team, name one? Clay and Simon are faster than any backs we've had under Riordan other than Craig, the Twins were 4.65 kids. The receiving core goes about 6 deep with kids that can get down the field except for Fagnana but he probably has the best hands on the team. Please don't say we were faster with Hill and Hudson, they were big but neither could probably break mid-4.6/4.7. I guess I'll just have to prove that to you when the season starts, even though I get daily workout reports.

Update on a fluid situation: Based on some new information, I would go ahead and consider Calvin Hill to Crosby a done deal. Crosby may have lost Craig Williams but we just picked up Austin Walter 2.0. Based on the work he did in 21-6A as a junior I would expect Hill to average over 200 rushing ypg in the new 5A-D2.

Guess it's time to put the cow out to pasture aye?

I said they were the best offense in Crosby's history and that first playoff game typified that statement.

Final Rankings mean nothing

Hmm, I now see why people mock you on these boards. I mean yea totally a top 150 player in the country who needs that really...

I agree if we have another d1 running back coming up we won't miss Craig... We don't currently.

Howard is not RJ. Howard can be very good if he plays within the system. RJ is a once in a decade talent.

Howard makes solid decisions with the football. He has an accurate arm and is pretty good.

He's not Kellen Haynes and Crosby doesn't have any Phillip Beck's either.

Ironic given I had a front row seat to two years of Hayes and Beck.

Literally two years ago.  Netherly, Craig, Patterson, all the Dbacks on that team were extremely fast. Our team speed is not going to be as quick, but that really doesn't prove anything.

Yes, Woodard is a burner? Like do you see what you type? Dudes gonna be a great route runner and possession receiver that's why his nickname is "Little Witten". I get it why people think you have zero clue of what you're talking about.

**unrelated point.**

if Calvin Hill is at Crosby and gets cleared that would be a huge boon for the Cougars and would definitely set us up to play with anyone in the district that kid is extremely good.

Calvin Ran pretty will in our 21-6a district against some not so great defenses even when they knew thats all Sterling was throwing at them.  Against North Shore and Atascocita he ran for 76 yards combined and 1,790 against everyone else lol..
