So apparently the BOM's and  Shannon Allen have already told the kids that "Hurricanes" (which was one of the favorites amongst students) as a mascot is out.  It was said that It could be a painful reminder for some in the community.  They might as well go ahead and name the school, pick the mascot, decide the colors and everything because that's what they really want to do...

That seems to be the case from what I hear. The "committee" consisting of students, teachers and community leaders looks to be just a "token" committee.

Personally, I didn't like the Hurricanes as a mascot, but if that's what the kids want, then so be it.

It didnt say BISD would only pay 86,000 just talked about salaries around the State..

I can tell you one thing if its under $95,000 alot of coaches wont be applying. Like someone else stated just take the money you would give to Central coaches and split it among the two schools between Head and assistant coaches.

If it is in fact around that number of $86k idk how BISD expects to compete for good coaches and if we do get one he'll gone after 2-3 successful seasons

I never said that's all that they would pay but I said what they currently are paying.

That's what we've been for many years now if the coach isn't from here...

Wow I guess Miami is hearing it from the community how bad of a team name they picked smh

If the committee picked it, that's what it should be.  They shouldn't be trying to sway votes...  Well, of the voting process is done right, then there should be nothing that Dr. Allen could do.  I assume they are giving a 'friendly suggestion'?  ...and that's still not right...

Also found out tonight that the AD is submitting or asking for a pay raise for the head football coach.  The deadline for applicants is next Friday the 9th and "they" want an outside hire for head football coach.

A pay increase is necessary, but probably will come too late to increase the quality of the applicant pool. However, don't you think an outside hire is probably the right thing to do. It eliminates any disputes about favoritism. It is going to be hard enough meshing a coaching staff from both schools, the ultimate arbitrator and decision maker needs to be unbiased.

I have no problem with an outside hire.  Hopefully a few good ones put in with the understanding of getting a pay raise that is approved by the BOM's.  I told someone last night that I don't want a first time head coach UNLESS they come from a winning program like North Shore, The Woodlands, Atascosita, Katy, Cy-Fair, Manvel, Carthage, etc.  Otherwise give me someone that has at least been a head coach before and somewhat successful.

Trust me, I want the best kids on the field regardless if they come from Central or Ozen.

You are dead right. I think an experienced Head Coach is a must. The primary need will be organizing a staff and getting the kids to believe in the PROGRAM.

If a outside hire does come about I really hope they keep a coach from each school to come along to the new school. And not gut everybody.

From what I've heard if an outside hire is made, they will have to keep at least a few from both schools.  Me and you both know, they can hire and outsider but as soon as the next pretty hire paying job that is closer to their home comes calling, they are gone.  Hopefully it want be until after the 3rd season so that all the current Central and Ozen students will have graduated.

I believe it's in teacher's and coach's contracts that a merger can't be the reason for a demotion/decrease in pay.  At least what I've been told....

Coaches are classroom teachers. That s what makes up most of there pay. Coaches pay is just a stipend. And you can lose ur stipend.....there s fine print in there

WOSGrad, is the server ready for the spike in activity that it will get tomorrow?  We don't need the forum crashing...:)

This site is secure and will in prime form tomorrow.  The site that you have to worry about crashing is uil-texas.org.  It always crashes on realignment day!

AAW and I have both signed up for a press release from the UIL so we will be getting an e-mail which we hope will have the new districts so that we don't have to wait for the UIL to get their IT act together.

Grad is there a set time they usually release the districts?  I need to schedule my work around it :)

Do either of the communities that comprise Ozen or Central want to fight to keep their head coaches in their current position at the new school, or are they more open to an outside hire?

In my opinion, it is good to open ALL the head positions up.  Not saying that none of the former in-house coaches won't get their respective position (I believe girls volleyball, girls basketball and girls track will stay in-house) but why not see what outside candidates apply?  The AD, BOM's, Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent want an outside hire for football from what I was told.  Hell, no outside candidates might even apply for the football coach.  In that case you might have to go with Nelson or Taylor.  I just think it would be harder for the Central kids to buy in to Taylor (3-15) vs Ozen's kids buying in to Nelson (21-31) if it comes down to that.  The only argument that I've heard from Ozen faithful on Nelson is his run in's with UIL.

With the application deadline being February 9th, we will be able to find out who all applied shortly after that.  I do know that the plan is to have a coach in place by spring break, if not sooner and to do spring football in May.

Those are some horrific numbers. Not to sound like a jerk, but don't you think there is bound to be a better hire available than what they currently have?

    • That there’s not a single thread on the fact that the Republican nominee is on trial for paying off a porn star with whom he had an affair while the future First Lady was carrying said nominee’s child.    I remember back when the dirty, no-good Dems sacked Gary Hart over something similar. Same thing with John Edwards and later Anthony Weiner.    But y’all keep pretending God is on your side, lol.
    • I hear what you’re saying, BUT… that hammers the hell out of poor people and the ones with multiple properties don’t eat any more than the poor ones. In fact, you’d basically just be taxing a lot of peoples’ EBT payments. The government  can’t get ahead by taxing what they’re already borrowing to give to people.    I think well off people should pay more… but the scale as it exists is broken.    For the sake of argument, my mom’s house in Groves is valued at $125k. 2/1/1 on a slab.  Her tax bill is $850/year. Without exemptions, her bill would be 3200. It’s right on JCAD’s website. The problem is this…. If someone tries to rent out an identical house, they’d expect to get, what… $1200/month? If you take into account that homeowners/windstorm/flood is a minimum of another $2k per year, you’d need $5k a year just to cover the taxes and insurance. That’s four months (1/3 of the year) just to cover those costs, not counting a potential mortgage payment. But then everybody cries about how expensive rents are… you can’t tax the hell out of non-homestead property to make up for gifts given to homeowners in the form of big tax cuts. It just doesn’t work.    Ten acres in Lumberton? I’ve got a buddy with 10 acres in Lumberton on HWY 69. Prime property… it’s his retirement plan. Sale it one day and cash in. The CAD decided that it no longer qualifies for a special use valuation (timber) and stripped his “exemption.” His 2023 tax bill jumped from $25 to $22,000…. It’s insane.
    • I’m curious what happened… they aren’t even in full pads yet.
    • They’re going to have win almost all remaining games and get finals of tournament to think about an at-large. When LU was in the WAC, Grand Canyon got an at-large after New Mexico St came out of nowhere to win conference tournament. Grand Canyon had a dang good resume that year. It can happen, but resume wise isn’t in their favor.
