22-5A Question

I know with Ike, the districts changed to allow games to be played every five days, since most of the schools were effected and unable to play for weeks, but is there a plan in place if a district has one or two teams that are unable to play when district games are supposed to start? I am asking because from what everyone has said and the photos I have seen, I am at wonder if Vidor or PAM will be able to be ready to play next Friday. PAM it sounds like could be longer than just next week. Does anyone know how that would work to accommodate those schools.

I was working on a similar question on another post but I'll just post it here since it is related to what you asked...

Can a school start football practice even though the school hasn't started classes?  The reason I ask is because district play is supposed to start on the 15th but Port Arthur Memorial isn't  scheduled to return to school for 3 to 4 weeks, last I heard.

UIL has said that schools can practice while school is out. I am guessing normal in-school (8 hours) practice instead of 2 a-days, but they can practice. Most schools are voluntary because the players may be in a shelter, with family, or working on cleaning and fixing their house.

Schools are also allowed to scrimmage, which is why Barbers Hill is scrimmaging Monday and then playing a game Friday. Katy and Collins are actually scrimmaging Friday night since both teams are without players due to flooding.

PAM seems like they will be ready to go. Harrison said they are only missing 5 players that are in shelters outside of PA. If volleyball can have games and practice before school even starts, I don't see why football can't do the same

That's what I was thinking.  Volleyball starts way early.

The answer came in part from the coach I was speaking to.  He is from a school that is scheduled to start next Monday.  He is getting grief from the principal and administration about even opening up voluntary workouts.  The reasoning behind the grief is that young men even though they are not compelled to attend, will take "unnecessary" risks in order to attend these workouts or practices.  If something were to happen to one of those young men, either in transit to or during practice, the administration is fearful of the liability it would face given that it has made a decision that the schools are currently not in a condition to attend.

Is that likely to happen? No.  Given sovereign immunity laws would a school district face liability?  Doubtful.  But tell a superintendent or board member that.

I would say Vidor is in much worse shape than PAM. Memorial high school didn't get any water in it. The stadium is fine also. PAISD said it could be up to 3 weeks until school opens, but it could be sooner.

Remembered that Memorial was on the north side so I knew it should be good, but did not know about the students and coaches. If they can start playing next week that is great. As for Vidor I have not heard or seen much on it, which is understandable all things considered. Did the High School actually flood or did the water just get close to it?

It's actually quite surprising that Memorial HS didn't take in water being that the area used to be marshland AND that the high school parking lot routinely floods even in light rain.  Also, not even 3 blocks away, there was horrible flooding at homes and the elementary school that's also on 9th avenue.  I'm starting to think that the damage was not assessed from the inside, but only from the outside...

Probably PN-G since they are the only ones that have a game this week, with the exception of Baytown Lee.

PAM cancelled their game with Westside, but they are looking for a scrimmage this week. As far as I know Vidor did get water in the school. I know Coach Mathews' house did also, as well as Coach Faircloth. A lot of players and coaches in this area dealing with a lot. Still everyone I've talked to wants to get playing ASAP.

yes they can. Once you get passed the Start date set by the state of texas you can practice as if you are in school.

The bigger issue might be equipment and a place to practice.

So...

PNG good to go - Game vs Sterling

Nederland good to go - Game vs Dayton

PAM good to go - Scrimmage vs Channelview

Livingston good to go - They're scheduled to play Caney Creek, not sure what shape CC is in

Lumberton is scheduled to go back to school on the 11th, but HF can't play this week

Lee is good to go - They're scheduled to play GCM, not sure of the status of that game

Central and Ozen are waiting for water access, and their games have been cancelled

Vidor is dealing w/ substantial damage to their community/school

Feel free to correct me as needed, just trying to recap the state of the district.

Pretty much correct.  Although the measures in Beaumont to temporarily fix the water situation seems to have Central and Ozen ready to go.

I imagine we will know more after the DEC meeting that is supposed to take place.

I saw Central practicing at HF this morning and heard Ozen also was practicing there. At least they are getting some practice time in. They are not too far from where the helicopters are loading hay to drop for cattle.

Haha, I saw a facebook live from Jag Insider which showed one of those big Chinook helicopters landing while Central was practicing.

    • That there’s not a single thread on the fact that the Republican nominee is on trial for paying off a porn star with whom he had an affair while the future First Lady was carrying said nominee’s child.    I remember back when the dirty, no-good Dems sacked Gary Hart over something similar. Same thing with John Edwards and later Anthony Weiner.    But y’all keep pretending God is on your side, lol.
    • I hear what you’re saying, BUT… that hammers the hell out of poor people and the ones with multiple properties don’t eat any more than the poor ones. In fact, you’d basically just be taxing a lot of peoples’ EBT payments. The government  can’t get ahead by taxing what they’re already borrowing to give to people.    I think well off people should pay more… but the scale as it exists is broken.    For the sake of argument, my mom’s house in Groves is valued at $125k. 2/1/1 on a slab.  Her tax bill is $850/year. Without exemptions, her bill would be 3200. It’s right on JCAD’s website. The problem is this…. If someone tries to rent out an identical house, they’d expect to get, what… $1200/month? If you take into account that homeowners/windstorm/flood is a minimum of another $2k per year, you’d need $5k a year just to cover the taxes and insurance. That’s four months (1/3 of the year) just to cover those costs, not counting a potential mortgage payment. But then everybody cries about how expensive rents are… you can’t tax the hell out of non-homestead property to make up for gifts given to homeowners in the form of big tax cuts. It just doesn’t work.    Ten acres in Lumberton? I’ve got a buddy with 10 acres in Lumberton on HWY 69. Prime property… it’s his retirement plan. Sale it one day and cash in. The CAD decided that it no longer qualifies for a special use valuation (timber) and stripped his “exemption.” His 2023 tax bill jumped from $25 to $22,000…. It’s insane.
    • I’m curious what happened… they aren’t even in full pads yet.
    • They’re going to have win almost all remaining games and get finals of tournament to think about an at-large. When LU was in the WAC, Grand Canyon got an at-large after New Mexico St came out of nowhere to win conference tournament. Grand Canyon had a dang good resume that year. It can happen, but resume wise isn’t in their favor.
