2017 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

BURKEVILLE MUSTANGS

2016 Record; 0-10 Overall, 0-5 in District

6th Place in District 12-2A-II

Once a symbol of excellence in Southeast Texas, the Burkeville Mustangs have recently struggled and the struggles continued in 2016 as the Mustangs failed to win a game.  But 2017 brings a new year and Coach Kenneth Thomas is counting on some hard work by the veterans, including ten returning starters, to allow the Mustangs to grind out enough victories in order to return to the playoffs for the first time in five years.

Head Coach: Kenneth Thomas

Assistant Coaches: Chris Meche (Defensive Coordinator), Terry Rogers (Offensive Line)

Offense

The Mustangs return five starters to their multiple set offense.  The backfield running will be left to senior back Zalan Lews and junior back Josh Adams.  Also look for freshman T.J. Hunter to contribute this year out of the Burkeville backfield.  The Mustang line will be on the young side as junior lineman Donavan Engel will anchor a line which will also feature sophomore linemen Devon Lakey and Kaleb Urie, as well as freshman Shakori Ford.

Defense

The same five return to the Mustang defense as well in 2017.  Engel, Lakey (2nd team all-district in 2016) and Urie will again hold things down on the front line.  Lewis will team with Hunter to lead the Burkeville linebackers.  Adams (2nd team all-district) will anchor the Mustang secondary.

Special Teams

The kicking duties are up for grabs, but it appears that Adams will be the primary kick returner in 2017.

Hate to see teams go 0-10.  Only nine games this year, but maybe next year they could find a few non district opponents they could be competitive with.  Pretty rough four teams for a 0-10 team to start off with.

Good luck to the Mustangs.
