1. Buna people please don't be offended by my above post. It was not directed at the Buna team. Please accept my apologies. Truth is Buna played very well. Defensive scheme for the Cougars was dead on and the team attacked the ball well. Gang tackling and penetrating the line play of Newton was also other areas Buna had success in. Offensively Buna, as well as Newton, was inconsistent. Some big plays then stall. Both teams got a good workout and no major injuries I saw. Getting ready for next week is what it was about.
 2.
Rest the starters
I disagree somewhat. I think we need to give the starters some reps against someone besides our own team. A little conditioning work and timing. Then sit them. This on both sides of the ball.
 3. Newton will travel to Buna for their second scrimmage of the year. JV starts at 5pm. Varsity to follow. I will be there. Have kin on Buna squad. Comments before the scrimmage?
 4. Good luck to Silsbee. Good luck to EC too, except in one particular game!!  :)

Fumbles seem to be a weakness. EC with a young offensive line stood toe to toe with Silsbee by one poster . An experienced line can do damage against them. Good job EC, another representative of 10-2ADI.
I don't know about this toe-to-toe thing. EC offensive line produced a total of just 46 yards in controlled scrimmage (-14 rushing) and 85 total yards (-15 rushing) in the 2 quarter live scrimmage. I think it was obvious that Silsbee defense out performed the EC offense. ;)
Any way you want to spin it AAW, Silsbee has 2 tds in 2 scrimmages against 2A teams. You can say how "obvious" this or that is. What is "obvious" to me is Silsbee better find something they have been missing in these scrimmages. And I don't care if "their coach said". I saw them last week and you saw them this week. With all the preseason hype they should have rolled over at least one of these two teams. Hasn't happened.
My comment was about the EC offensive line and how they performed against the Silsbee defense. It was in regards to the comment made about going "toe to toe". That was not the case. As for the rest of the scrimmage, I have already made my comments on that subject.
In your opinion "this was not the case". One poster said it wasn't that obvious. I quoted them with the "toe to toe". I believe it's up to the individual to believe whom they wish as posters and just because your opinion is "this was not the case" doesn't make it the absolute truth. I saw Silsbee last week and all the excuses in the world will not make that scrimmage anything other than what it was. Silsbee got hammered IMO. So to me EC's young offensive line must have done pretty well by simply staying on the field with Silsbee's "beast" and their defense. Other posters said the yardage lost by EC was due to a couple big QB sacks.  Again, Silsbee better step it up before next week, IMO.  ;)
Exactly.
We just can't win the big one. We were knocked out of the regional finals in the 80's and 90's by Willowridge (remember Thurman Thomas?), WO-S (remember Kevin Smith?, those were some dynamite games and teams), A&M Consolidated, LaMarque and Texas City (we were totally overmatched in the last two). We were knocked out of the semifinals in 2002 (this was our best chance of winning after dropping to 3A with 2 D-1 players on the team - Joseph "Red" Bryant and Jorrie Adams) and 2003 by Burnet. Then, lost in the state game in 2004 to Gilmer by 2 points in a game that most believe we were cheated on the 2-point conversion. We haven't sniffed a regional game since. Man, recounting all those losses is painful. Maybe we'll get some coaching consistency with Coach Barbay and he'll lead us to the promised land.
People don't remember it took his dad 20+ years as head coach at Newton to win his first state championship. Then he went back twice more winning one of those. He was an assistant when Newton won their first championship. Hang on to Darrell. It takes a lot to win a title. Good kids, good coaching, and a certain amount of luck during the run.

He shines on far less carries only question is the completion he is facing, plus starts on defense and has played both ways on varsity since his freshman year so it's clear he can stay healthy, only injury was a high ankle sprain soph year missed 3Gms Year.  Car Yds Avg Lng TD Total  318 3692 11.62  82 58 12-13 151 1810 11.99 82 31 11-12. 85 884 10.40. 80 12 10-11. 82. 998  12.17. 80. 15
Those are good numbers but I would argue that Austin Walter's 1976 on 196 carries is more impressive considering the competition. He's not far behind the career totals too and has only played two varsity seasons. I hope he does well but backs from the smaller classifications have struggled on the 40 acres. I remember Traylon Shead from Cayuga rushing for about 10,000 yards in high school and he had the THSF all-time TD record when he left. I don't think he ever got a carry at UT and is now at SMU. He was already over 200lbs in high school and benching 400 but I think the football stats came from competition more than anything else. According to UT's website Shorter is coming in as an ''athlete'' so maybe they have plans to try him at a couple different positions?
I agree somewhat. Level of competition between 2A and 5A is vast and jumping from 2A to  FBS will be a whole new world. Although the running backs coach(at Texas) did present him as a running back and what he could do for them out of the backfield, we'll have to wait and see where and how well he plays. I wish him well.
 13. I would love to see it, but don't think it will happen soon. Truthfully there is little incentive for this to happen IMO. Both programs are powerhouses in their own right and need to play good competition prior to district. Newton would benefit from this game but I don't know about WOS. Newton has a shrinking enrollment and I think will drop to 3ADII under the new UIL alignment which would put them in the small school now known as 2ADII. WOS should be playing equal size or bigger schools to tune up before district and currently do. The money available from such a game would also be a major factor as Newton could not carry a fan base large enough for a good gate at that game and has little money in the district to pay to play the game. Plus the Hurricane factor! ;D
