  3. 2018 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS BARBERS HILL EAGLES  2017 Record: 6-3 Overall, 5-3 District 5th Place in District 21-5A   The end of the 2017 regular season left Barbers Hill Eagles' Head Coach Tom Westerberg with an unusual problem...boredom.  That problem was due to the fact that the championship coach found his team narrowly missing the playoffs, something that a coach with a 162-23 career mark is used to.  Of course, that boredom didn't last long as Westerberg and his staff set out quickly to reverse their 2017 fortunes.   While plenty of familiar faces return to the Eagle sideline (46 lettermen, 7 offensive starters, 5 defensive starter), the district will look somewhat different as many of the obstacles to the Eagles' returning to the playoffs will now come from the eastern part of the area.  Head Coach: Tom Westerberg Assistant Coaches: Adrian Baker, Chris Cauley, Danny Cowgill, Kevin Ellis, Todd Francis, Aaron Fuller, Josh Gaines, Kevin Kilgo, Brian Moore, Darren Seymour, Bruce Taylor, Kyle Westerberg, David Wilkinson, Ray White Offense 7 starters return to the Eagle spread offense in 2018.  Senior quarterback Dalton Holland (66-103, 882 yd, 9 TDs in 2017) will return to lead the Barbers Hill offense.  Also returning to join him in the Eagle backfield will be senior running back Spencer Long (76 carries, 395 yd, 4 TD).  Returning to lead the Barbers Hill receivers will be senior wide outs Christian Rhodes (1st team all-district, 44 catches, 533 yd, 5 TDs) and  Brady Rogers (19 catches, 438 yd, 5 TDs).  Leading the way up front will be senior linemen Durham Avant (1st team all-district, 6'2", 282) and Ethan Haggler (6'3", 276).  Junior Casey Collier (6'5", 259) will also see time on the line. Defense 5 starters return to the Eagle 4-2-5 defense in 2018.  Up front, senior linemen Dylan Ausmus (2nd team all-district, 6', 254) and Austin Ballard (6'2", 249) will be the leaders.  Junior A.J. Warby (5'11" 162) will lead the Barbers Hill linebacker corp.  Junior safety Brandon Hefferman (2nd team all-district, 5'10", 161) and senior defensive back Dylan Frazier will anchor the Eagle secondary. Special Teams The special teams positions will be sorted out in the fall. 8. 2018 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS WEST BROOK BRUINS  2017 Record: 6-3 Overall, 4-2 District 3rd Place in District 12-6A   Over the last couple of years, the West Brook Bruins had been in a bit of an exile as they were sent out to Region II.  However, in February of this year, the UIL came to their senses and returned Eric Peevey's Bruins to their more familiar Region III and put them in a district much closer to home.  Of course, the UIL may not have done West Brook any favors as they again share a district with 6A power Galena Park North Shore.  However, the Bruins appear ready for the fight as they return 14 starters and 34 lettermen off a squad that put the Bruins in the Class 6A, Division II playoffs last year.  That experience plus some success in off season workouts, including a state qualification in 7 on 7, leaves West Brook ready to bolt to the top of their district. Head Coach: Eric Peevey Assistant Coaches: Heath Gerlufson - (Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line), James Harper (Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers), Jeff Breaux (Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends), Grover Smith (Defensive Line), Chris Coats (Offensive Line/Strength and Conditioning), Justin Block (Offensive Line), Parker James (Running Backs), Tommie Barrett (Defensive Backs), Todd Paine (Defensive Backs), Dereck Peveto (Linebackers), Michael Barnes (Wide Receivers), Kurt Zihlman (Quarterbacks) Offense 8 starters return to a West Brook spread offense in 2018 that averaged 40 points a game in 2017.  At quarterback, the Bruins return 3 year starter L'Ravien Elia (2017 12-6A Offensive MVP, 3000 yds passing, 2500 yd rushing and 50 TD in the last 2 years).  Out wide, the Bruins return to seniors Damon Ward (2nd team all-district, 12 receptions, 161 yd, 2 TD) and Deonte Simpson (1st team all-district, 15 receptions, 287 yd, 4 TD).  They will be joined out wide by senior Tyson Nonette and explosive junior Thad Johnson.  Senior Dylin Duhon will take over at tight end.  In the running game, senior Robert McGrue will be the latest in the long line of explosive Bruin running backs with junior Robert Meadows also getting a share of the carries.  They will be running behind an senior heavy offensive line which will be led by senior Donovan Edwards, a 3 year starter and 1st team all-district pick.  The line will also feature the talents of seniors Thomas Worley (2nd team all-district), Chris Thomas, Ja'Micheal Saab, GlenDerrick Roundtree and Corey Mojica.  Defense  6 starters return to the Bruin defense in 2018.  Up front, the Bruins will be breaking in a lot of new faces around senior nose guard Ryan Greenwood, senior end Trey Simms, and senior outside linebacker Daniel Coleman.  However, there are plenty of candidates ready to fill in as seniors Aric Haynes, Jared Lane and Jack Hall look to make names for themselves.  Look for junior end Jayden Bell to also get significant playing time.  While many in the linebacker corp will be sorted out in the fall, junior linebacker Dezmond Jackson is expected to establish himself as a force in the middle.  Behind them will be an absolutely stacked secondary which will feature senior safety Darrell Hawkins (2nd team all-district) and senior cornerback DeMarcus Coleman.  Joining them will be a cadre of seniors including Jarek Brooks, Drew Rawls, Deonzick Ware and Bralin Adams, as well as junior Nate'a Coleman. Special Teams Junior Kevin Lenarus will handle both the kicking and punting duties for West Brook.  Simpson, Thad Johnson and Nonette will be the primary kick returners. 10. 2018 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS WEST ORANGE-STARK MUSTANGS  2017 Record: 13-1 Overall, 4-0 District Class 4A, Division II State Finalists   2017 was more of the same for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs.....well sort of.  For the fourth year in a row, the Mustangs found themselves in the Class 4A State Championship game.  But for the first time in three years, the Mustangs fell one game short of a state championship.  But the previous four years have made the state championship more than a goal in West Orange, it is now an expectation.  For the Mustangs to meet those expectations, a lot of quick growing up will have to take place as Head Coach Cornel Thompson will take the field with the youngest WO-S squad in recent memory.  Of course, the last time that was said, the Mustangs ended up state champions. Head Coach:  Cornel Thompson Assistant Coaches: Ed Dyer (Offensive Coordinator), Mike Pierce (Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs), Justin Trahan (Offensive Line), Rick Butler (Offensive Line), Russell Bottley (Wide Receivers), Seth Thomas (Wide Receivers), Terry Joe Ramsey (Quarterbacks), DePauldrick Garrett (Running backs), Hiawatha Hickman (Defensive Line), Taylan Hebert (Defensive Ends) Offense Youth will be the name of the game as only 3 starters return to the Mustang spread offense in 2018.  Taking over as the Mustang triggerman will be junior quarterback Tyrone Wilson (8-11, 63 yards in limited duty in 2017).  The running attack will be experienced as senior running backs Kavyn Cooper (1st team all-district, 79 carries, 735 yards, 10 TD in regular season) and Justin Sibley (2nd team all-district, 40 carries, 317 yd, 3 TD) will pace the Mustang running game.  Senior Renaldo Rose will lead the Mustang receiver corp.  Junior tackle Quincy Ledet (12-4A-II Newcomer of the Year) and senior guard Ja'Corry Brady will lead the Mustang offensive line. Defense The Mustang Chain Gang defense will also be young as 3 starters return in 2018.  Up front, Brady (2nd team all-district) and junior lineman Shemar Manaway will lead things up front in the 50 defense.  Senior Lande Butler and junior Keonte Strother will lead the Mustang linebacker corp.  A talented Mustang secondary returns as senior safety Teshaun Teel (1st team all district) and cornerback Javonn Ross (1st team all-district) lead the way. Head Coach: Ross McMurry Assistant Coaches: Ronnie Ford, Tyler McDaniel, Coleman Butter, Daxx Hill, Quentin Cates Offense Nine starters return to the Colmesneil offense in 2018.  Plenty of firepower returns as junior running back Deavon Wooten (1st team all-district) and senior back Ryan Bray (2nd team all-district) will lead the rushing load.  Outside, senior wide outs Britian Ott (2nd team all-district) and Zane Hermen (2nd team all-district) return to bolster the Bulldog passing game along with senior tight end Skylar Tompkins.  Experience will also be present on the offensive line as senior Carlos Cuellar (1st team all-district) and junior Wesley Dobbins (1st team all-district) will anchor an offensive line which will also feature junior Gerrick Vrooman (2nd team all-district) and sophomore Kobe Shird (2nd team all-district). 15. 2018 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS NEDERLAND BULLDOGS  2017 Record: 8-3 Overall, 6-2 District 3rd Place in District 22-5A   2017 was a year of change for the Nederland Bulldogs as a new leader, Head Coach Monte Barrow, was guiding things on the sidelines.  However, as things changed the more they stayed the same as the Bulldogs, after a one year absence, found themselves in a familiar position.....back in the 5A playoffs.  2018 will bring even more change for the Bulldogs as many of the old foes that used to dot Nederland's district are gone and folks a little more to the west make up the new district 12-5A-II.  But 10 starters returning look to provide the same old result out of the new district. Head Coach: Monte Barrow Assistant Coaches: Chris Theriot (Defensive Coordinator), Bryan Spell (Receivers), Jay Stone (Safeties), David Crommett (Offensive Line), Jae Stoker (Offensive Line), Jody Walker (Defensive Line), Michael Todd (Secondary), Tony Tolbert (Linebackers), Michael Broussard (Running Backs) Offense 6 starters return to the Bulldog multiple set offense in 2018.  Returning to lead the offense will be senior quarterback Blaysin Fernandez ( 2nd team all-district, 83-149, 1315 yd, 18 TD in 2017).  Senior fullback Armani Douglass and sophomore running back Cade Scott will join him in the backfield.  Senior wideout Blayne Burnett will lead the Nederland receiver corp which will also feature senior Carsen Arline.  Senior guard Kevin Miranda (1st team all-district) will return to lead an experienced offensive line which will also feature senior Kevin Ramirez and juniors Jonathan Nguyen and Jadon Windon and will also include senior Aaron Saenz. Defense The Nederland defense will have some maturing early in the season as only 4 starters return to the Bulldog 3-4 defense in 2018.  The Bulldogs will be particularly inexperienced on the front line as seniors Dasean Somersall, Slate Bodin and Hunter Sonnier settle in the the starting positions across the front.  The Bulldogs will also be a bit young in the linebacker corp as senior Jordan Huckabay, junior Trey Scott and sophomore Mikey Rangel take over.  The strength of the Nederland defense will lie in its experienced secondary.  Senior cornerback Landon Hiltz (2nd team all-district) will anchor the experienced squad which will also feature seniors Noah Lewis, Brycen Grusecki and Adam Roccaforte, with junior Cedric Pete and sophomore Rene Cunningham also getting time. Head Coach: Keith Hendrix Assistant Coaches: Johnny Medrano (Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line), Sean Bates (Defensive Coordinator/Outside Linebackers), Jake Howard (Defensive Line), Earl Campbel (Receivers), Jamaul Ross (Safeties), Jaraud Ross (Cornerbacks), Mike Hutchins (Inside Linebackers) Offense Cleveland's multiple set spread will return only 1 starter from the 2017 squad.  The quarterback will be finalized in the fall, but the new signal caller will be handing the ball to seniors Montrail Searles and Bryce Burch.  They'll be running behind the lone returning starter, senior center Dylan Roundy, who will lead an offensive line which will also feature senior lineman Noel Limon, junior lineman Nathan Payne[Pershall and sophomore tight end Andrew Alpha.
